Officers at the Belmont Police Station escaped death and serious injuries after gunmen opened fire on the building during the early hours of yesterday.
According to a police report, around 3.05 am, Cpl Caracillow and PC Phillips were on duty in the CID office located on the north-western side of the building’s second floor when they heard three gunshots.
The officers also heard a loud crashing sound from the window on the western side of the office. Both officers took cover.
A short while after, while making checks around the station, the officers saw what looked like bullet holes in the window and damage to the central door of the office. Police said as the two officers continued to make further checks around the station, they spotted three projectiles on the ground of the office.
No one was injured.
ASPs Ferguson and Walker, in company with Inspector Soodeen, visited the scene. A CSI team subsequently processed the scene.
Police are working on the theory that gunmen opened fire on the station since they said given the damage, the shooting was deliberately done as the gunmen aimed solely at the station.
Investigations are continuing.
