The Hazardous Seas Alert, which was activated on Friday afternoon to cover open waters and along exposed coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago, remains in effect and at alert level YELLOW, according to an updated advisory from the Meteorological Service. The alert will remain in effect until noon on Tuesday 21 December 2021.
The Met Service says relatively strong winds continue to cause above normal seas conditions. Rough and choppy seas have been observed in open waters especially around northern and eastern coastlines of Trinidad and Tobago. Wind waves are occasionally in excess of 2.5 metres, which can be especially hazardous to small craft and offshore operations.
Forecasters warn these rough seas can lead to large waves and dangerous currents. In addition, conditions along exposed coastlines especially at seawalls will be exacerbated at high tide.
The Met Service is advising small craft operators, sea bathers and all other marine interests to exercise extreme caution in all sea related activities. Members of the public must heed all instructions from lifeguards and be alert to large waves and dangerous currents.
