Ahloy Hunt says he and his brother Gary still love and respect each other, even as he (Ahloy) prepares to contest the St Joseph seat in the forthcoming general elections for the United National Congress.
"I love my brother and my brother loves me and we are still close together," Hunt said yesterday, one day after being announced as the UNC's candidate.
Hunt said he and Gary, a former Minister of Sport under the People's National Movement, still have a close bond.
"We're both adults and professionals and we respect each others' decision," Ahloy told Guardian Media in a telephone interview.
He said he decided to join the UNC after looking at how the country was being managed by the current PNM Government.
"It seemed as though a small percentage of the country was enjoying the wealth and it was not being distributed equitably," Hunt said.
The aspiring MP said he has a lot to offer the country now as a politician based on his experience, capabilities, expertise and knowledge in security and management. He said for him the time was also right.
"I have so much talent and I need to give back to the people of this country," he said.
He said St Joseph is a constituency he is very familiar with, having grown and lived in neighbouring St Augustine.
"So I am going up for a constituency that is dear to my heart and close to home."
Hunt said he also doesn't think much of the incumbent PNM MP Terrence Deyalsingh.
"He's really an absentee representative," he said.
He said the people in the area "lack proper representation" and Deyalsingh "only makes it easier for me."
Hunt, 55, said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve and trust put in him by UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Hunt, a lieutenant colonel, is now on the security team at the Trinidad Generation Unlimited (TGU). According to his bio, he has over 30 years’ experience in security at the highest levels in both national security and the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment (TTR).
