Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar says that the United National Congress (UNC) internal elections will be held “very shortly.”
Speaking at the South Regional Family Day in celebration of the party’s 35th anniversary at South Ranch in Debe, Persad-Bissessar did not disclose the date of the elections, but she said it will be called when constitutionally due and her slate will win.
The current national executive’s term of office will expire on June 26.
Urging members not to listen to the lies of her detractors, she said, “We have three elections due to be held in the next few months. There are two Local Government by-elections. This is for the Lengua/Indian Walk in the Moruga/Tableland seat of Michelle Benjamin, and the next one is Penal Morne Diablo in my Siparia constituency. We shall win both of them. We shall open nominations for these two by-elections very soon.
“Also, our great party is due to hold the National Executive elections this year, I’ve said so many times. We have people who lie on us. As your leader, I have always called for Natex and all other elections when they are due in the party and in the country.”
While she did not call names, she said, “Who doh hear will feel. So we will call our Natex elections very shortly.”
Noticeably absent were Mayaro MP Rushton Paray, Naparima MP Rodney Charles, Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Dr Rai Ragbir, Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes-Alleyne, and Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally who have been demanding that Natex elections be held.
