Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is not supporting recent comments made by Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP) leader Phillip Alexander about the grief displayed by People’s National Movement (PNM) members following the deaths of Lisa Morris-Julian and two of her children in a fire at their home in Arima on Monday.
Following the tragedy, Alexander took to social media to attack Arouca/Maloney MP Camille Robinson-Regis for her public show of anguish at the scene.
After signing the condolence book for Morris-Julian at the Red House rotunda yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said she did not back Alexander’s comments.
“Almost the entire Opposition bench is here today in solidarity, in public duty, as we mourn the passing of our colleague, so I will not endorse those statements. If they have to burn, they will burn on election day, but I apologise for that,” Persad-Bissessar said.
However, she said she did not think Alexander’s comments would affect her party’s alliance with the PEP for the general election.
“I didn’t hear it myself, and I would want to hear it before I make any decision, but I don’t think that will affect our plans going forward. We have to win this election, and we need every hand on deck, we need every person on deck, and we have to remove this wicked, incompetent Government.”
