Attorney Ashvani Mahabir, a former media consultant to former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, yesterday replaced former UNC Senator Gerald Ramdeen on the Opposition’s Senate bench.
Ramdeen resigned from the UNC’s Senate bench last week before he appeared in court on alleged corruption-related matters. Mahabir was sworn in as a UNC Senator yesterday.
Mahabir, 46, said he joined the UNC around 1998 and was UNC youth officer under Panday’s tenure. He said he resigned in 1998 to pursue law studies.
He and his brother Anil (deceased) had been active in the Panday UNC period and he’s contributed to Letters to the Editor pages over the years.
His resume states he was a talk show host over 2005/2007 and communication manager for the Chaguanas West MP (2007-2o10) Jack Warner.
In UNC’s hotly contested 2012 internal election, however, Mahabir lost a bid for chairmanship to then chairman Warner with 656 votes to Warner’s 12,565.
Warner had accused UNC’s hierarchy of backing Mahabir to become the party’s new chairman.
Mahabir’s resume also stated, over 2013 to 2015 under the PP Government, he was Special Advisor to the Trade Minister, and a consultant in the PP’s Ministry of the People/Social Development. He was also a communications/media consultant to the PP prime minister over 2013/14
Yesterday, he said he felt the time was right to participate now and he brought a blend of experience to UNC.
