The Maracas St. Joseph home of UWI lecturer Indera Sagewan, nearly caught fire when a high-tension wire fell on her roof last night.
According to a police report, Indira, a UWI lecturer, was at home with her 83-year-old mother, and her 24-year-old daughter, when the house lights began flickering. They also heard loud noises from the roof. Upon checking, Sagewan noticed sparks, flashes, and smoke coming from the roof. Further investigation revealed a live wire from the electricity pole had come into contact with the roof.
Fire officers and T&TEC personnel and contractors from Transline, responded quickly. They managed to disconnect the power supply to the house, preventing a fire. On inspecting the roof, fire officers discovered that the wire had burned through approximately 4 feet of galvanize, leaving debris. After prying open the roof to ensure there was no fire inside, they sprayed the ceiling and roof with water to fully secure the area.
The damage was estimated between $8,000 and $10,000, but fortunately, no one was injured.
Speaking briefing with Guardian Media Sagewan confirmed the incident.
"I'm okay. Everybody's okay. Got some damage in my daughter's room, but only one room thank God," she said.
She said there's currently no electricity to her house but it's being sorted.
This incident comes just days after Minister in the Ministry of Education and MP Lisa Morris- Julian, and two children died in a house fire at Farfan Street in Arima.
Sagewan said she would be able to say more about the incident when things calmed down.
