A bar brawl turned deadly on Wednesday night, when 33-year-old Denzil Brewster of Princes Town was stabbed to death during a confrontation at La Vegas Bar in San Fernando.
Police said around 8:30 pm, Brewster was liming at the bar located at the corner of Lord Street and Coffee Street in San Fernando when a dispute erupted between him and an unidentified man.
In front of several witnesses, the stocky assailant drew a knife from his waist and began stabbing Brewster multiple times.
Off-duty police officer Kyle Assivero, 24, of Claxton Bay (who is attached to the Couva Police Station), tried to intervene but got injured.
Officers of the Southern Division Emergency Response Patrol (ERP) quickly arrived at the scene and transported both Brewster and Assivero to the San Fernando General Hospital.
However, despite the efforts of the medical team, Brewster succumbed to his injuries around 9:12 pm while undergoing emergency surgery for wounds to his chest and upper hip.
PC Assivero is said to be in stable condition.
The suspect, who fled the scene on foot, remains at large.
Officers of Homicide Region III, including PC Seedath and WPC Rampersad, are continuing investigations.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact Crimestoppers at 800-TIPS or the nearest police station.
