A Barrackpore man who admitted to stealing TSTT cables has been fined $5,000.
Nigel Nelson, 42, pleaded guilty before Princes Town Magistrate Indira Misir-Gosine.
Prosecutor Sgt Shazeed Mohammed told the court that around 2.45 am on February 17, PC Figaro, of the Emergency Response Patrol team in the Southern Division, was on patrol when he saw a blue Kia vehicle along Kanhai Road North, Barrackpore, parked on the side of the road.
When the officer stopped and asked Nelson, who was in the driver’s seat, about the TSTT cable in the tray, Nelson said, “Yes officer, me and some fellas take the wire, I really sorry. It will not happen again.”
The cable was valued at $20,630.40. PC Figaro arrested and charged him.
Asking for leniency, Nelson’s attorney Petronilla Basdeo said he was shot by a trap gun while hunting in 2017 and his right leg was amputated. He had no previous convictions or pending matters.
Nelson has three months to pay the fine or, in default, he will have to serve six months simple imprisonment.
