In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing in­to the death of Vir­gil Saun­ders in Cen­tral yes­ter­day morn­ing.

Po­lice said Saun­ders was lim­ing at a bar close to St Mary’s Junc­tion and as he was at­tempt­ing to go in­to his ve­hi­cle af­ter leav­ing the es­tab­lish­ment, a gun­man ap­proached and shot him.

Saun­ders died on the scene.

The in­ci­dent oc­curred af­ter 3 am, just at the time the bar was clos­ing.

Po­lice said Saun­ders was known to ply his car as a ‘PH’ taxi along the Ch­agua­nas to St Mary’s Junc­tion route. Po­lice al­so said Saun­ders was pop­u­lar in the Cen­tral area among limers.

Saun­ders’ rel­a­tives, who were at the Foren­sic Sci­ence Cen­tre, St James, yes­ter­day, de­clined to com­ment, ex­cept to say that he was the fa­ther of a two-year-old child.

In an un­re­lat­ed in­ci­dent, po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cause of a fire in En­ter­prise, Ch­agua­nas, which claimed the life of a man.

Guardian Me­dia un­der­stands that on Sun­day morn­ing, po­lice were alert­ed that a gal­va­nized struc­ture was en­gulfed in flames.

Af­ter the blaze was con­tained, po­lice dis­cov­ered the body of 36-year-old De­vanand Balchan.

Po­lice say they ob­tained CCTV footage that showed two peo­ple flee­ing from the scene short­ly be­fore the fire be­gan.

In­ves­ti­ga­tions are on­go­ing.
