A 29-year-old man from Naparima/Mayaro Road, Union Village, is lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries after his home caught fire early yesterday morning.

Ameer Mohammed said he was asleep around 2 am in the living room of his house, when he was awakened by a crackling sound. He said he looked up to see bright flashes. By the time he ran outside, the electricity panel outside the house was sparking and on fire.

Mohammed said a wire fell onto the house and set his wooden home ablaze.

“I lost all my documents, all my birth paper,  ID card, drivers licence,” he said.

“Thank God I have my life still,” he added.

Mohammed said fire officers had to be deployed from the Rio Claro Fire Station, which is about an hour away. He said by the time fire officers arrived, everything had already been engulfed in flames.

Mohammed, who lived in the house for over 15 years, is appealing for assistance.
