The Min­istry of Works and Trans­port has an­nounced up­dates to the De­mer­it Points Sys­tem un­der the Mo­tor Ve­hi­cles and Road Traf­fic (Amend­ment) Act, 2017, ef­fec­tive No­vem­ber 18, 2024.

These changes re­flect re­vi­sions to fixed penal­ties and de­mer­it points for spe­cif­ic traf­fic vi­o­la­tions.  The key up­dates are list­ed be­low.

Traf­fic Sign and Traf­fic Or­der Vi­o­la­tions:

   ●   Fixed penal­ty re­duced from $1,000 to $500.

   ●   De­mer­it points re­duced from 3 to 2.

Park­ing and Stand­ing Vi­o­la­tions:

   ●   Breach of park­ing re­stric­tions, in­clud­ing stand­ing for hire at non-des­ig­nat­ed places, penal­ty re­duced from $1,000 to $500, with de­mer­it points low­ered to 2.

Ve­hi­cle Equip­ment Of­fences:

   ●   Of­fences re­lat­ed to de­fec­tive iden­ti­fi­ca­tion plates or ve­hi­cles with­out si­lencers re­main at their pre­vi­ous fixed penal­ties but have re­duced de­mer­it points from 3 to 2.

Dis­abil­i­ty Park­ing Of­fences (New Ad­di­tions):

   ●   Us­ing an al­tered, ex­pired, or in­valid dis­abil­i­ty park­ing per­mit: $2,000 fine, 3 de­mer­it points.

   ●   Fail­ing to dis­play a dis­abil­i­ty park­ing per­mit cor­rect­ly: $750 fine, no de­mer­it points.

   ●   Fail­ing to re­turn an in­valid dis­abil­i­ty per­mit: $500 fine, no de­mer­it points.
