The female corpse found in a ravine with chop wounds on Saturday has been identified as Chaguanas teenager Nekanya Mohamdally, who went missing last week.
Mohamdally, 17, was identified by her mother at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday, after police made contact with her over the weekend. An autopsy showed Mohamdally died from chop wounds to the neck.
On March 19, her relatives reported to police that she had left home on March 17 and never returned. They reported that all efforts to contact her had failed.
According to reports, police went to a ravine at Exchange Lots, Couva, where they found Mohamdally with several chop and stab wounds about her body. At the time, she was in a black short tights, black vest and a pair of tan-coloured slippers. Through the rose tattooed on the right side of her stomach, police were able to match her with a victim in their missing persons' database and contacted her relatives
In an unrelated matter, police are hoping to identify the body of a man found in bushes in the Mon Desir on Saturday.
According to reports, the body of the Afro-Trinidadian male was found next to a bottle of Hard Wine near a garden along the Solomon Hochoy Highway Extension Project. Around 6 pm, a group of friends were liming and taking photographs near the Berridge Trace overpass when they noticed the body in the bushes. When they checked, they saw the body, which was in the initial stages of decomposition.
Fyzabad police responded to the report and officers said there were no visible signs of violence. The man wore a dark blue T-shirt, a pair of blue cargo pants and a brown belt but did not have any shoes. He was dark in complexion, had a bald head and was estimated to be in his late 40s. A district medical officer ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre, St James.
Although it remained unidentified up to yesterday, investigators were working along with relatives of missing persons to determine who is the victim. Meanwhile, fingerprints are expected to be taken to match with the police criminal database. Once identified, an autopsy will be done to determine the man’s cause of death.
