Imam Rasheed Karim, chairman, Umah T&T/ Muslim Federation is confident that Muslims in T&T will play an important role in the marginal seats in the upcoming general election.
“We want to make a dent in places like Moruga/Tableland and San Juan/Barataria and others. Because of the misrepresentation of the PNM Government, they have given the election victory to the UNC,” he said.
The federation represents 17 independent Islamic organisations in the country that are not aligned to the biggest Islamic organisations.
He estimates that there are at least 175,000 Muslims in T&T.
He also said that they had sent proposals to the current PNM administration but all of these have been ignored.
“Our group sent in 17 points dealing with crime, poverty, the economy and so on and we never heard from the Government.”
According to a statement from the group, Islamic leaders and community activists will affirm their support for Kamla Persad-Bissessar leader of the United National Congress (UNC).
The event will be held on Sunday at 10.30 am at the Felicity Diplomatic Centre, Cacandee Road.
The statement said more than 50 leaders from throughout Trinidad, most of whom preside over communities in the marginal constituencies, have agreed to come together to pledge their support for the UNC under Persad-Bissessar.
The agenda for the meeting will comprise short presentations from the federation officials on "topical issues that have significantly impacted the Islamic community and greatly influenced their decision and their communities to back the UNC on August 10", the statement said.
