First Citizens Sports Foundation Sportsman of the Year Renny Quow pulled his hamstring and did not complete his 400m heat on the opening day of the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Doho, Qatar yesterday morning. Following his race, which was won by Russian Dmitry Buryak in 47.03, the Tobagonian said that the timing of his injury could not be worse.

“I pulled both hamstrings while training two weeks ago,” he said. “I thought it was over. I really wanted to run well here in my first world indoor champs. You will see me in the summer.” Countryman Jarrin Solomon didn’t make the cut either, placing fifth in Heat Four (22nd overall) with a time of 48.37. Buryak was the ninth best in the heat stage which was led by USA’s Jack Torrance (46.70).

Later on in the semifinals, the fastest time belonged to American Bershawn Jackson (46.13), who will meet Torrance, David Gillick (Ireland), William Collazo (Cuba), Chris Brown (Bahamas) and Nery Brenes (Czech Republic) in the today’s final. T&T’s last athlete standing, shot putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown will enter the qualification round today, needing to place in the top eight of 17 women in order to qualify for the final tomorrow.
