Fourteen horses have been slated to face the starter in the feature Grade One Midsummer Classic, the second leg of local racing’s Triple Crown, on Monday at Santa Rosa Park, Arima. The event, for West Indian bred three-year-olds over 1,900 metres, carries a purse of $450,000. The John O’Brien trained Grand Riviere, unbeaten in her last seven starts and winner of the Carib Brewery Guineas, first leg of the Triple Crown, is among the favourites.

Several top owners and trainers have brought in foreign jockeys to partner their charges. These include Wilmer Galviz, Allen Maragh and Cecilio Penalba. When entries were taken yesterday at Santa Rosa Park, 105 horses were due to take part in the ARC’s ten race card. Post time on Monday is 11.30 am.
