The Oilfields Workers' Trade Union has been granted an injunction by the Industrial Court preventing Petrotrin from carrying out its termination of workers.
This means the state-owned oil company will have to cease the current termination exercise, including offering VSEP packages, which it started over the weekend as part of its plan to restructure the company.
Petrotrin requested a stay of the matter pending an appeal but this was refused by the court.
The basis of the union's argument is that the Petrotrin board initiated the process of shutting down its operation without proper consultation.
The court will sit on the matter on October 30 with a judgement expected three days thereafter.
