A 54-year-old Pe­nal man was shot dead as he raised an alarm dur­ing a break-in at his home just af­ter mid­night, on Mon­day.

The de­ceased has been iden­ti­fied as Nar­ine Singh, 54, a labour­er of Char­lo Vil­lage.

Singh and his 58-year-old wife were asleep in their down­stairs apart­ment around 12:05 am on Mon­day, when they awoke to a noise that sound­ed as though a lou­vre pane was be­ing forced open near the bath­room area.

Singh got up and went to in­ves­ti­gate the noise.

His wife re­port­ed­ly heard him shout, "Who is that dey?"

Im­me­di­ate­ly af­ter­wards, she heard sev­er­al gun­shots.

Singh's wife found him un­re­spon­sive and bleed­ing from sev­er­al wounds. He died at the scene. Neigh­bours heard the loud ex­plo­sions and called the po­lice.

Crime scene in­ves­ti­ga­tors re­cov­ered six 9-mil­lime­tre spent shells and a pro­jec­tile at the scene.

Of­fi­cers of the South-West­ern Di­vi­sion and Homi­cide Bu­reau of In­ves­ti­ga­tions Re­gion 3 were at the scene.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors are still try­ing to as­cer­tain a mo­tive for Singh’s killing.
