A 54-year-old Penal man was shot dead as he raised an alarm during a break-in at his home just after midnight, on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Narine Singh, 54, a labourer of Charlo Village.
Singh and his 58-year-old wife were asleep in their downstairs apartment around 12:05 am on Monday, when they awoke to a noise that sounded as though a louvre pane was being forced open near the bathroom area.
Singh got up and went to investigate the noise.
His wife reportedly heard him shout, "Who is that dey?"
Immediately afterwards, she heard several gunshots.
Singh's wife found him unresponsive and bleeding from several wounds. He died at the scene. Neighbours heard the loud explosions and called the police.
Crime scene investigators recovered six 9-millimetre spent shells and a projectile at the scene.
