The T&T Police Service (TTPS) has commended a member of the public for heeding the call to report crime after a pensioner was found murdered and buried in his backyard.
The body of Levi Duncan, 75, was found on Tuesday afternoon in the back of his home at Poinsettia Drive, Coconut Drive, Morvant.
The gruesome find occurred just after 9 pm following a report from a member of the community.
Officers from the Homicide Bureau and the North Eastern Division searched the premises and found Duncan’s body in a three-foot-deep grave.
It had been wrapped in a white tarpaulin and tied with brown straps.
Police said Duncan’s body had been rolled in a bloody bedsheet before it was wrapped in black plastic and tied with brown straps, and then rolled in the tarpaulin and buried.
A male relative, who was at the house, was later arrested by police in connection with the murder.
Investigators said a resident of the area contacted police to say that they heard a commotion coming from the pensioner’s backyard. When they checked, the resident saw three men, including Duncan’s relative, standing over his bloody corpse.
The informant told police Duncan’s body bore marks of violence and a gaping wound was seen on the left side of his neck.
Snr Supt, North Eastern Division, Mervyn Edwards yesterday renewed calls for the public to partner with the police.
He said the call for people to say something if they saw something had proven successful in this instance. —Anna-Lisa Paul
