A pri­vate hire (PH) taxi dri­ver from St James was stabbed to death in down­town Port-of-Spain on Fri­day night.

Around 10 pm, Jabari Phillip, 31, of Benares Street, St James, parked near the cor­ner of Hen­ry Street and In­de­pen­dence Square and got out of the car.

Phillip had a brief ar­gu­ment with a man who was stand­ing at the side of the road. The man pulled out a knife and stabbed Phillip once in his chest be­fore run­ning away.

A pass­er-by went to Phillip’s as­sis­tance, placed him in his car and drove to the Ac­ci­dent and Emer­gency De­part­ment of the Port-of-Spain Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal. Phillip was pro­nounced dead on ar­rival.

Phillip’s at­tack­er was not ar­rest­ed, up to late yes­ter­day. An au­top­sy is ex­pect­ed to be per­formed on the body at the Foren­sic Sci­ence Cen­tre in St James lat­er this week.
