Last week, plant operator Ryan Johnitty send out an open invitation via Facebook to people in need of food to reach out to him.
He had already helped two people and was working on other hampers when his life was taken.
His parents found his body on the staircase inside his Palm Drive, Dow Village, South Oropouche home shortly after 7 pm on Monday.
A bag white plastic bag was over his head, a cord and belt were tied around his neck and there was also a wound to his neck.
The house was ransacked and items were stolen, including his white Kia Optima.
Acting on a tip-off around 3 pm yesterday, PC Figaro, WPC Hepburn and WPC Keezer went to Dolly Street, Marabella where they saw four men by the car.
They ran off when they saw the police vehicle, leaving behind the tools they were using to change the rims.
The car was already fitted with false licence plates.
Johnitty’s white Kia Optima was missing as well as items from inside his house.
Johnitty, 33, originally from Bonasse Village, Cedros, built the house and moved into it about two years ago.
He worked at Trinidad Generation Unlimited, lived alone and had no children.
His home was burglar-proofed, had an electronic gate and had surveillance cameras.
However, it is believed that the assailants cut the wires to the camera system.
He had worked the 7 am to 7 pm shift on Monday. It is believed that Johnitty was killed sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning since none of his relatives or close friends heard from him on Tuesday.
His parents and other relatives were at his house yesterday, but they did not want to be interviewed by Guardian Media.
A close friend, who requested anonymity, said Johnitty’s parents decided to leave their Cedros home to visit him for a number of reasons.
As their only child, Johnitty would usually speak with them every day, but they did not hear from him on Tuesday.
He said on Monday night Johnitty sent a voice note to his friends saying that he was very busy and could not participate in their Playstation game session.
He said that was unusual because Johnitty was not in the habit of sending voice notes.
Another red flag was that a friend went to Johnitty’s home on Tuesday evening after he failed to answer calls and messages and noticed his car missing.
Johnitty was supposed to have worked the 7 pm shift that day.
“He is normally punctual with work and stuff like that and when the friend realised that it was coming close to him to go to work and he wasn’t answering any calls and stuff like that, he went to check on him. He realised the car not home and he contacted his mom and his mom and dad came and found him inside. From what they say the entire house was ransacked,” the friend said.
An autopsy is expected to be done this week at the Forensic Science Centre.
