Special Reserve Police officer Akeem James has been denied bail on charges of rape, grievous sexual assault and false imprisonment of a 29-year-old Venezuelan woman.
James, 28, appeared on Wednesday before Princes Town First Court Magistrate Wendy Dougdeen-Bally on Wednesday.
The magistrate was told that James had a pending matter of a similar nature.
James was charged on Tuesday night by WCpl Dane-Marie Marshal of the Professional Standards Bureau.
The offences allegedly occurred between November 23 and 24, 2018, at a house at Fairfield Road, Princes Town.
Prosecutor Sgt Gary Santlal objected to bail, citing that James is on bail for a similar offence, the seriousness of the offences and the safety of the victim.
In asking for bail, James's attorney Dane Halls countered that his client has been attending court for his pending matter religiously and was not a flight risk.
He said James lived with his mother in Princes Town and was employed as a driver at two companies.
He argued that the prosecution provided no evidence to support their claim that the victim may be at risk if his client was granted bail.
The attorney said James had been a police officer for the past six years and has no children.
The magistrate agreed with the prosecutor's objection and refused to grant bail to James. She advised him of his right to apply to a judge in chambers for bail.
She also directed the prosecution provide the defence with a copy of the summary offences.
The magistrate also directed that the file be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and an update be provided to the court at the next hearing.
Attorney Trevor Clarke was also in court for the matter told the magistrate that he was representing the interest of the Police Complaints Authority. The matter was adjourned to July 10.
