Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday is next in line to be dethroned.
This was the warning delivered by deputy political leader of the UNC Jack Warner, yesterday, moments after Dr Surujrattan Rambachan was not returned as an alderman in Chaguanas Borough Corporation.
It means that the former mayor will not retain his post. Showing a photo of Natasha Navas, 30, Warner said she would be sworn in as the central borough's new mayor on Thursday. Warner said: "The next hurdle I am going after is Panday. Change is going to come in the UNC, whether it is above or below. Today, it has come from below. "It is the beginning and it is going to develop for all those that resist change." Navas, from Felicity, is an employee of First Citizens.
Rambachan served as mayor at Chaguanas Borough Corporation for six years, and his ouster was a move that shocked many and brought several of his employees to tears.
Denying that he paid a $100,000 bribe to the councillors to ensure that they voted against Rambachan, Warner said: "They voted by secret ballot. I do not know who voted for who. I never paid money. That is foolishness." Admitting that it was no secret that he was working to ensure that Rambachan was removed from office, Warner said he met with deputy mayor Orlando Nagessar, two weeks ago, and informed him of his plans.
"I told Nagessar to go to Panday and tell him what I was doing. I was not hiding anything, because if he did not agree they will suffer in the end." Nagessar will also be replaced as deputy mayor by Nalsingh Rambarran. Warner said first on the agenda for Navas would be to meet the vendors of Chaguanas Market. "She is a people's mayor; that is why she will be in office and others will be out," Warner quipped.
Yesterday, Panday said many had tried to dethrone him, but had ended in the political cemetery.
