Bas to meet Jack’s constituents today

Published: 6 Aug 2009

Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has thanked estranged MP Jack Warner for making it possible for Prime Minister Patrick Manning to claim on Monday night that “Chaguanas is now PNM.” Manning and several PNM speakers had underlined the claim—that “Chaguanas is PNM” and that the area “is now PNM country” at PNM’s Monday night meeting at Centre-Pointe Mall.

The boast began with the meeting’s chairman Joel Primus and continued through other speakers climaxing with Manning who proclaimed it with some glee as he surveyed the audience at the PNM meeting held in central Trinidad, traditionally an Opposition stronghold.

Asked on Tuesday how he felt about the PNM’s boast, Panday said sarcastically: “Well, first of all I want to say thanks to Jack Warner because he’s trying his best to hand Chaguanas over to the PNM.” Panday is expected to meet constituents of Chaguanas West today. On Manning’s dismissal of the UNC’s claim of “ethnic cleansing” in hospitals, Panday claimed, “I don’t expect him to admit racism exists, but everyone knows racism exists in the allocation of housing and state resources. Call it what you want, it does exist in the public sector, it must be fought by everyone of us and admitting that it exists is the first step toward doing this.”

Panday confirmed that the UNC did not hold its usual Monday night public meeting this week due to the current Parliamentary break and since several MPs including MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar were overseas. Persad-Bissessar was due to return from a legal case in St Kitts yesterday. However, Panday said the UNC had adopted a new format for maintaining contact with the public during the break, rather than Monday night meetings. He said the UNC on Monday started a series of Monday night radio broadcasts.

Guests speakers on Monday night’s broadcast were MPs Tim Gopeesingh and Subhas Panday, who spoke about UNC’s “ethnic cleansing” claims and security issues. Panday dismissed Manning’s claim (at PNM’s meeting on Monday night) that UNC only had enough supporters now to fill two maxi-taxis to attend their public meetings. Panday disagreed with the perception that the UNC’s support had shrunk. Panday said, “We’ll determine our agenda and strategies and the PNM will determine theirs. I’m sure they’ll be happy if we formulate the wrong one.”

Panday is also maintaining contact with “ground support” via a series of community meeting which started on Tuesday with youths in San Juan/ Barataria. Panday said he planned to go to various seats over the break.
He will also begin meeting Chaguanas West constituents from 10 am today at the office of Chaguanas deputy mayor Orlando Nagessar.

qoute'i don't expect him to admit racism exists' .Look who is talking, isn't this the same man that wipe his hands after he shook manning hand at the opening of parliment. What could be more racist than that?

Racist? Hah. Class less

Racist? Hah. Class less maybe, but a long stretch to say Mr. Panday was acting racist to the PM!

I remember years ago that Mr

I remember years ago that Mr Panday challenged Mr Manning to a debate, Mannings response was that he would not go in the same room with that man.

The fact of the matter is while everyone is busy classifying these politicians behaviour as racist or class less etc - the reality is that this present lot of politicians main objective is power, which has led them to do and say anything to achieve this regardless of the consequences to the people (this is just my opinion based on their actions).

While it's difficult given the environment we are forced to live in, we need to focus on ourselves and do and say what's right, and be a role model to those around us.

Agreed. Also, Manning at

Agreed. Also, Manning at that time was an insecure, less educated - probably still is Freshman - in political terms - and couldn't face Bas.

Which is why he has surrounded himself with the "Yes Mr. Prime Minister" types - remember that BBC show - at least they had a Perm Sec with smarts and kept the country afloat. We have to contend with civil servants filing suits.

LOL,or else yuh go cry.

maybe his hands were sweaty.

LOL , Zando this is very funny , in deed .
The B-ass should not get Jack angry because his wife may have to get someone else to stand bail for her . Panday will rather destroy the UNC than step down and let the party recover from the worse type of political illness - "Internal division" .

SILLY2ddone , I will be in

SILLY2ddone , I will be in T&T in December 2009 . Dinah knows that Jack Warner and Mayor Navas are good for Chaguanas , and she also knows that Panday is the BANE of the UNC and by extension , Central Trinidad . Panday is losing support in Couva North and I am predicting that if he runs in the next general election he will lose his seat . SILLY2dbone , Trinidad business men/women own plenty business entities in Barbados and bajans have plenty investments in T&T , therefore , what happens , political & socio-economically , in T&T , is my business . Barbados imports more from T&T than we export to T&T . Our economies are interlocked . I have family that are trinis some living and some buried there . Trinbagonians have just subscribed to bonds for a loan to Barbados of $120,000,000.00 in 5 months . In short , trinis and bajans are one family .

Panday is the joker of the

Panday is the joker of the century. You can never see him in his constituency, but he want to make political mileage in Warner constituency. I saw him on TV (Panday) and he was grabbing words and forgetting facts. He senile already and he still fighting. I wonder if Panday dies of natural causes, what will happen to the UNC. That will be the big question. Who will get the so called base? Panday lost over 4,000 votes last elections. I predict if he goes to the polls again, he might be the leader of the UNC, but he might loose his seat. Lets just say, the UNC were to win elections and he lost his seat, I bet Panday will find some excuse to be PM. The man just like those blue lights. When Manning was beaten in the elections just before Ramesh split, Panday said Manning should resign, because he lost two consecutive elections. How much elections did Panday loose? If it good for the goose Panday, it good for the gander. Panday will NEVER give up leadership. The man just like power. And what is the excuse? " I figh with blood and tears". Panday never spilt any blood, or tears, so who he talking about?

Funny how afro-trinis wanted

Funny how afro-trinis wanted Obama to win election because he is
a black man and also the Republicans was not so effective as Bush
administration failed, yet Manning and the PNM is also not effective yet they would not put an Indian in power. As my black
and personal friend said 'if we do not have a black prime minister
we loose Trinidad. Keep on frighting Panday.

Fright is the right word

Fright is the right word because he has proven he can't fight.

This Seems like a case of

This Seems like a case of the Racial Pot Calling the Racial Kettle Black.....
