Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday is calling on PNM councillors in the Chaguanas Borough Corporation to work together with the UNC to get rid of Chaguanas Mayor Natasha Navas and the PNM. Panday’s comments came when he paid a courtesy call on PNM councillor for Enterprise, Ronald Heera, yesterday.
He was taking a mid-morning break from meeting more than 40 constituents of Chaguanas West who had come to see him at the offices of the Chaguanas Deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar. Heera refused to comment, however. Panday said the corporation was not divided into three political groupings, but two, since he viewed the PNM and the Ramjack faction as one entity.
A smiling Panday walked coolly and comfortably into the Cumberbatch Street venue at about 9.45 am. When asked if he planned to visit the mayor, Panday said: “If I want to go to a puppet show, I go to the circus.” He said he could go anywhere in T&T because he was the Opposition Leader for the entire country.
Deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar said Navas’ strings were now being pulled by former PNM senator and minister in the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Satish Ramroop, who is being paid by the Ministry of Local Government to act as Navas’ personal assistant. “He is a rejected, discarded government senator and he is now employed in the mayor’s office as an adviser/personal assistant...The PNM have further penetrated into the borough,” he said. Ramroop later told the Guardian that he was not pulling Navas’ strings, but as an assistant and adviser would sit in at meetings.
Sanitation workers ask Bas for help
Panday first met with a group of disgruntled sanitation workers, some of whom had been waiting from 7 am to see him. The contract workers were terminated from the corporation because of the lack of funds. They had been working on a month-to-month basis for the past five years. Panday said he could give no guarantees since the UNC was not in power. He said the people visiting him came with problems varying from job loss to the lack of infrastructure in the Chaguanas West constituency.
Navas blames Rambachan
Navas, who said she was getting a “hard time” from the media, did not go to see Panday, but welcomed his efforts to help the workers. She said former mayor Dr Suruj Rambachan was informed of the problem of funding for contract workers in January and March, and did not break the workers’ contracts when it became necessary to do so. She said: “Mr Rambachan knew about this. The accounts department told him on and on…even at the council meetings it was said to him that the funds were in the red. “When I came into the mayorship, we had nothing in place to deal with the contract workers being sent home.”
Suruj: I would have sent home no one
Rambachan said Navas should get down to the business of saving the jobs of the burgesses. The ousted mayor said the contract workers would have gone home a long time ago. But, under his stewardship, he said, the borough found $209,000 to fund the contract workers through very prudent management. “Navas does not understand what is going on…If I was there, no one would have gone home. I would have found ways to ensure continuity,” he said.

To that end it is unethical to 'find' money to keep employed any person which violates the accounting principles. Yes, former the Mayor was able to find the funds, the question here is from where? Every organization has a budget for how funds are to be allocated and they MUST be allocated as prescribed, and only if properly ratified can they be diverted. So I present this to you, to keep employed these 50+ persons, money could very well be taken away from emergency services, school feeding, municipal health care facilities etc. So to all who take exceptin with Mayor Navas' decision, Iask this, are you ok with that prospect? I'm not! I empathize with the men and women who will be on the bread line, but the blame does not lay at the feet of the current or previous mayor...it lies between St. Vncent and Ambercombrie streets in good ole POS!!!

You're a former bank worker and you're accustomed to dealing with plenty money. Use your financial and other skills and stop blaming the former Mayor Dr Rambachan. For starters, your sponsor and MP for Chag. West may be asked to cough up some money to re-employ these contract workers. He has already paved some roads, so what is a lil small change to feed the hungry bellies of these poor families? Don't start the blame game - you're in power now, so do something.

Less than six months ago there was rumblings in chaguanas with these same month to month workers and Mr Rambachan A female employee in the borough and Mr Rambachan were even on the media pelting blame at each other, they are all hypocrites and deal only in dishonesty they know the truth. The media is having a field day with this as they are biased and they never look for the truth as that does not sell newspapers.
MRS NAVAS is not to blame for these sackings that was already in the works. All they had was month to month contracts, precarious in itself.

Dinah, you buy a foreign used vehicle from Singapore and it break down. Would it do any good to perpetually blame the previous owner from Singapore or Ohioho, everytime it breaks down? You are the new owner /driver, so go by a good mechanic, fix the vehicle and drive it best as you can, even if you have to put on your learners' (L) plates. And if you driving good, sure enough, even the geriatrics who you seem to hold in contempt, are bound to recognize good driving when they see it.
It does no good for a driver to sit behind the steering wheel and constantly cuss every other driver who gives him / her a 'bad drive'.

People are not joining together to vomit venom, they are trying to get together for the good of the people of that borough. That issue of month to month workers has been going on for months in the borough and now they are trying to blame her for what has happened. Imagine a old man of diginity goes up there and starts name calling, no that old man has to go as gutter politics is on the way to the cemetery.

The economies of Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago are interlocked and only yesterday the Government of Barbados got a loan of US$120,000,000,.00 from the Royal Bank of T&T and the bonds took only 5 months for trinibagonians to subscribe to them . Many bajans shop in T&T every year and they love to shop in Chaguanas because the prices are right and the service is very good .
