$11m more for PM’s residence

Published: 10 Sep 2009

An estimated $11 million has been allocated in the 2009/2010 budget for reconstruction of the Prime Minister’s residence in St Ann’s.
The Draft Estimates of Development Programme for 2010 said that figure was part of a $46.5 million allocation to the Office of the Prime Minister from the Infrastructure Development Fund.

The Government proposes to spend $3 billion from the 2010 budget on its development programme. That sum excludes an additional $3.9 billion on development spending which is to be funded from the Infrastructure Development Fund.
The largest single amount from that fund, $700 million, has been allocated to the Ministry of Planning, Housing and the Environment, while the Ministry of Works and Transport has received an allocation of $613 million.
The Government also proposes to spend $15.5 million from the Infrastructure Development Fund for the restoration of Whitehall, which will become a Protocol House for visiting heads of government and state.

The sum of $20 million has been allocated for restoration of Stollmeyer’s Castle, one of the Magnificent Seven buildings around the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain.
Other funds set aside include:
■ $3 million allocated for the construction of a new office for the Ministry of the Attorney General in south Trinidad.
■ Establishment of an office for the AG in Tobago would cost $1 million.
n Construction of a building for the Criminal Law Department and other divisions (North office of the DPP)—$500,000
■ Upgrade of facilities and construction of a new wing at the Sir Hugh Wooding Law School—$2 million.

More info

The PM’s residence was initially estimated to cost $40 million in 2007. It then rose to $148 million and revised in September 2008 to $175.3 million. It was further increased to $244 million this year.

These People are Pipers They

These People are Pipers
They pipe away billions of dollars now that the money running out they going to theif money from you and me via property taxes ...the cards are on the table like ture pipers the are wandering down your street looking at your property and working out 3%-5% of the value in taxes...Poor and Middle Class People DEAD..DEAD..DEAD

When I said the time for

When I said the time for "peaceful demonstrations" should end I most certainly didn't mean to give up...and not inciting violence either, I meant it needs to be tackled from a different angle, because our dear government isn't listening to the peaceful protestors are they?!

kunyo

kunyo

I do not recall seeing anyone suggest anything that hinted at violence or even inciting it.

Desmond suggested demonstrations around the Savannah.

I have made my suggestions.

Do you have any suggestions?

...and what about that dying

...and what about that dying 9 year old child who desperately needs a liver transplant, can you not spare a meagre 1.3 million to save this child's life, a soul? Which Mr. Manning do you think is of more importance, more curtains for your fancy mansion, or the life of an innocent child...I mean seriously, which????!!!!!!

England.

I really believe time for

I really believe time for "peaceful demonstrations" in Trinidad and Tobago is over, we are dealing with a greedy, cruel, heartless man who doesn't give a damn about the citizens of this country, and doesn't think twice about rubbing it in the faces of ALL!!!!!!!!!!

So kunyo

So kunyo

Perhaps "peaceful demonstrations" are not feasible at this current time. But, do you have suggestions to put on the table?

This ship is s[t]inking! If you were on the Titantic, would you have given up your life so easily? Noooo! You would have fought. You would have found something/material to jump into the sea with, to help you float. That you may then die from hypothermia as a result of the freezing temperature of the water would not even have entered your mind, for you to 'go quietly' as the Titantic sunk. Why should we 'go quietly'!!!

If you were advising a member of your family about what to do if they were being attacked/raped, would you advise them to 'accept it'? Nooooo! You would tell them to fit back; scream loudly; scratch his/her eyes out; hit him in the gogolies!

I have already submitted my suggestions; some possibly feasibly, some tongue in cheek, some possibly down right impractical. But! I am fighting! Perhaps, just perhaps, someone may read my suggestions and spark a thought in them that turns out to be a workable solution.

The prevailing collective consciousness of hopelessness must change. I have said it before and will say it again... 47 years of Independence; 50+ years of oil. Is this the best we can do?! We need to start thinking less like 'dogs who have owners'; we need to think of our selves as 'cats with staff'! The government is... our... staff!

So, I am not giving up and I dare you not give up!

PS. If I am not mistaken, the tone/languague used by some bloggers has evolved, since the Guardian relaunched their website earlier this year. There are less direct insults at fellow bloggers (now allyuh, doh prove me wrong!) and more posts directed at the article and issues/perceived issues. If we can evolve here on the Guardian e-edition, why can we not as a society evolve too?!

PS 2. If we just sit there and cry into our beer/mauby, now that the price of beer has gone up, our staff will indeed think we like it so!

Mr.Prime Minister , what

Mr.Prime Minister , what about adequate housing for the poor people of "Sweet T&T" . Laventille comes to mind , which needs a few million dollars to be spent on providing adequate housing for the residents , many of whom have been supporting the PNM for years . How can the PM and his wife sleep well at night , knowing that less that a mile from their stately home , citizens are living in sub-standard dwellings - and some are even living on the streets ; where is the love , Mr.Prime Minister ??? The residents of Laventille should stage a peaceful demonstration in Woodford Square and let the PNM government know that Laventille is not only a source for PNM votes but they have needs , their children need hope for a bright future and not to be surrounded by adject poverty . The PNM government should be shame to spend so much of the people's money on housing diplomats and the Prime Minister while on the other hand , the poor working class citizens of "Sweet T&T" , continue to live in despair . Over $700,000,000.00 spent on the Summit of the Americas , millions will be spent on the Commomwealth Conference , where is the love for "your people" , Mr.Prime Minister ??? Eric Eustace Williams must be turning in his grave because of the PNM turning it's back on the needs of the poor people of Trinidad & Tobago .
"Where there is no vision , the people perish" .

Manning you can give each

Manning you can give each one of the families living in the river a house with that money. But the PNM rather see them people wash away next year, just an on going process.

Do you all Hear that???

Do you all Hear that??? That's the sound of all our hard working money going down the drain..

That's where your increased tax will be going.
When you go to the hospitals and you can't get the medical attention that you are paying for that's where the funds are going..
When you call the police and wait days for them to arrive- that's where the money is going...
When you stuck in traffic due to inadequate infrastructure- That's where the money is going..
AND
When you stuck in a Gov't office with little or NO customer service- That's where your money is going!

Hmph,Take That!

VOTE PNM!!!! HAIL CAESAR MANNING!!!

You left out the flooding (caused by squatters I recall hearing about?) and ineffective/insufficient public transport system...

PS. I wish I could be a fly on the wall, when some of the 'Cabinet meetings' are being held; when the meetings to dicuss these budgets and allocations are, umm, dicussed. I find it incredulous that 'educated' people are sitting there, referring these 'budgets' and 'proposals' and these pronouncements are what are forthcoming. I am finding it increasingly difficult that there are not more representatives in the House and Senate, even if they are PNM, who are not questioning this spending...

I wonder, if there are any recipients of the Independence Day Nationals Awards, who would be willing to return their ribbons and medals in protest (or boycott 2010's award ceremony) at the nonsense of all this. There are people who, as a matter of principle, have either turndown their awards from Queen Elizabeth II or returned it because they disagreed strongly with the policies of the UK government... I wonder...

"I wish I could be a fly on

"I wish I could be a fly on the wall, when some of the 'Cabinet meetings' are being held"

The thought has crossed my mind... But, I think the implications would just be to much, I have a stroke every time I read or hear of the utter lunacy this Gov't does on a daily basis.

I don't think I could withstand how these ideas are born... to witness the drooling, the gapped eyes, and the low brain fuse buzzing.. Being a fly on a wall it would be more deadly than BOP!

I would be begging to be swatted with a newspaper...

Kitty! How unlady like!

Kitty! How unlady like!

I would be begging to be swatted with a newspaper...

Me... not you! That comment almost made me...ehem. Anyhow. (^_~) Very funny!!

I won't ask you wish 'brand' of newspaper... the 'Gazette' perhaps? (The same one that did not 'publish' the Uff Enquiry) Or something more [insert word of choice].

La Diva

Hee Hee ...As long as it's

Hee Hee ...As long as it's not D same Gazette paper my owner lets me piddle in..

One word for you both.

One word for you both. Flit.

Piddle? You piddle Miss Kitty. I guess that you poem as well.

Anyhow, that $11m is not enough. I say give him at least $30m to do what has to be done. Then valuate the place and buss a 3% tax in he bambalam. After all, ent the place is he own.

Another $11 million?! If I

Another $11 million?!

If I ran my business this way, telling my shareholders I need $40 million to refurbrish my corporate accomodation... and then said, by the way, the 'final' cost was $244 million (and my pensioners were not getting thier pension due to 'computer glitches')...oh and by the way, I want another $11 million, I would be done for fraud and embezzlement!

Somebody needs to be held to account for this (not a scapegoat) and fast! This is our money that is being treated like if it is a blank cheque!

PS. Doesn't the government 'scream' at interest groups who put in requests for funding and then go back and say they want more, as it was not enough? Doesn't the government tell said interest groups "you have to make do; budget carefully; cut your cloth to fit your purpose"?

It is high time we, the shareholders tell the government the same thing with regards to our money!

PS 2. And when will we start hearing about a sum for "reconstruction" for the President's House?
