Angry Rowley slams Govt spending spree

Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley has expressed anger that citizens were being forced to finance Government’s expenses through the introduction of increased taxes. These taxes included the ones proposed in the property tax reform plan, after the country’s revenues had been squandered from what Rowley referred to as a mismanagement of funds.
Rowley warned in his contribution on the 2009/2010 budget debate in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon that next year would be a difficult one for the people of T&T.
He said the burden would be on the people to fork out additional finances for Government to support its spending.
“The money (is) done. The money (is) done. We are now talking about raising revenues,” He said.
Rowley said his objections to the controversial multi-billion-dollar projects of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott) were among his attempts to stop taxpayers’ dollars from being put to misuse.
“I am mad as hell about this. You know why? You know why? Because I tried to prevent it and when I tried to prevent, right, I was attacked, I was assailed, I was slandered,” Rowley said.
“When I tried to prevent this, I had my character called into question in this House.
“I was asked to account for money that was never missing and that was done by the head of the Government, my Government, (and) I have made it a known fact that I am PNM and I will remain PNM.”
Rowley expressed outrage that the Government appeared to be ignoring the welfare and well-being the people on a sustained basis.
He called on the Government to do what he described as “back up a little bit (and) face the reality.”
Rowley said, “At the end of the day, it is the pensioners, the poor people, all of us, who are now being called to put our shoulder to the wheel.”
He explained that among those who would be forced to suffer from increases in the property tax were pensioners who lived along the streets of Woodbrook and whom possessed multi-million dollar property as a result of an economic change over the last 25 years although their homes were built 40 years ago.
“Some of them are barely making ends meet on their current income and they are being called upon to pay for the void for those for whom $50 million more in this contract and $60 million more in this contract was no big thing,” Rowley said. “They (those with power and authority) had the opportunity to act on behalf of the people of T&T and (spending) a $50 million more there or a $1 billion more there did not matter.”

I have been following Dr Rowlwy's career, and although I agree disagree with him on some issues, I have to say that the man was right all along.

Rowley is quite right but why did he not speak up much earlier about his boss's squandermania?
This iniquitous property tax will kill those with a little fixed monthly income. These people who worked hard all their life to own a home might be "property-rich" but "cash-poor". Will they have to sell their homes to pay the taxes before their properties are seized and given over to the party supporters by Emperor Mugabe? Will they have to apply for HDC housing, and if unsuccessful because they don't carry party cards, become "pavement-dwellers" or land up in St Anns or the paupers' cemetery?

Mr. Rowley, you say you are "mad as hell" and will take it no more. You did try and ws beaten down, kicked out with your tail between your legs. But the outrage being imposed by this gov't on the innocent people of our country has gone too far.
But it appears that you are back and recharged. So don't let your people down. Every voice fighting for our survival, adds one more to the count. If you ever think of backing down, remember that you have a responsibility to the people you swore to serve, and not the 'inner circle' who are abusing their 'office of power'.
This property tax will hurt the vulnerable - 'have nots' among us; as those who have will be able to weather the storm. Welcome back Mr. Rowley - your people need you, now more than ever.

To all the doubting ones who laughed at the PNM with vision 2020 and developed status. Have you people ever seen movies like Total Recall and Terminator, where in the future the average man and his family, catching their xyz to make ends meet and dogging bullets, runnig from bandets, living in pollution, while surrounded by high tech buildings and gadgets. You have seen such shows? Well, T&T almost there. Hail de PNM, we passing developed status before 2020. America eh want nutten wit we...we in de future!

It's Vision 2020 all right !! Except that it's likely to happen much sooner - in 2010.
Those who currently 'do not have' and are card carrying citizens will no doubt benefit from the upcoming property seizures that will result from the proposal to increase property taxes. And those who currently 'have' (even just on paper i.e. property) will become the 'have-nots'. It is a devious form of wealth shifting.
We can't help but be cynical when we see never ending reports of governmental spending and the associated waste. Where is the accountability and transparency?

thats not the issue the UNC top dog Basdeo Panday need to step down ASAP then you see the a big change these folks got rich while in power of Trinidad politics and was investigated,charged and convicted by a jury of their pairs and still is not imprisoned.Do you expect normal open minded thinking people to vote for him,did you see the image and language portrayed by his wife during carnival when her husband was top dog as she was interviewed by foreign TV crew while playing mass in one of the bands to me that (what a disaster)definately this did not look or sound like a first lady Please take examples from first lady Obama and the wives of heads of states.The People need someone with integrity to run the opposition to get the change needed.During the last election it was the year of the woman and the representative from Siparia should have been the UNC candidate for primeminister not Mr Panday with all his negative media as to his corruption and he ateempts to make every issue one of race and not bringing the nation together as one.The people got to be crazy to vote for his party or even tolerate someone like him with no integrity to run the country.So dont use the race card deal with the issues and get a candidate that honest and with integrity to represent the UNC party the race card wont help you ever its ignorant and misleading and discorages voters of others races from even taking a look at the core values of your party
