Validate hearings says Seetahal

Published: 2 Oct 2009

The proceedings of the Commission of Enquiry into the construction sector should be validated says Dana Seetahal, Independent Senator. “I think it is absolutely necessary to validate everything done by the commission of enquiry, or the work of the commission of enquiry so far,” Seetahal said. She supported her argument about the validation of the proceedings of the Uff Commission of Enquiry saying that all the matters could have been investigated by the proper authorities, as they ought to have been investigated.

Seetahal was contributing to debate in the Upper House on the act to validate the proceedings and the recordings of the Commission of Enquiry into the construction sector. Commenting on the appointment of Justice Anthony Lucky to inquire into the Government’s failure to comply with the legal requirement to publish the holding of the inquiry in the Gazette, Seetahal said she did not support the purpose of the appointment.

“One person inquiring into the failure of a commission of enquiry. It sounds funny. I don’t believe the appointment is under the commission of enquiry. Not that type of appointment. It is not a commission.”

Well Said Ms. Seetahal.

Well Said Ms. Seetahal.

The Lady has spoken.
Here is an intelligent voice of reason.
Lets move on.

We need to move on, yes, but

We need to move on, yes, but not before we listen intently to the noble contribution of Senator Helen Drayton.

I spent my day watching and listening to this debate from beginning to end. I was shocked at the sniggling that came from the government bench when the vote was being taken, so much for the "maturity" of the youngsters, it was as though they did not listen to the serious issues Senator Drayton's contribution raised.

Senator Drayton's contribution was significant in its content, sincerity of delivery and purpose. It came from her soul.

I would like to let her know that it was deeply appreciated.

Points well taken, Astley

Points well taken, Astley Merton:-

The gov't members sitting in session were there to cast their vote at the end, a vote that was already decided prior to entering the Senate chambers. Vote the party line! So no matter what was said, they had already 'tuned out' on entering the room. As readers and viewers we find this behaviour unacceptable, and it is our duty to pull them on the carpet if and when necessary. Your comments were important as such childish behaviour on display, even though they knew that the country was watching, speaks volume. Disrespect at the highest level.
Thanks.

That was my very reaction

That was my very reaction when I heard of this appointment of the retired judge to enquire into the enquiry. What is the purpose of this exercise, apart from giving a job to an old friend? We know for a fact that someone goofed, whether inadvertently or deliberately. Let's correct the error by validating everything done so far by Uff and proceed with full speed to wrap up the enquiry.

However, I am a bit concerned. According to Jeremie "the public awaits a report with perhaps, recommendations for reform from the commission, on the several matters within its terms of reference.” Is this all that the public awaits, or am I missing something here? Are we being prepared for a whitewash?

What concerns me more is

What concerns me more is that despite the validation bill being passed in the Senate and that we have to wait for the President to proclaim it as law (intgegrity commission where are they?), it may very well be that a stay in the commencement of the enquiry will be given by the court until they have completly heard the judicial review. The news is that this may not happen until February next year or perhaps later.

Senator Mark said yesterday the GORTT and UDECOTT is a unifying force. Interesting comment.

What is scandalous is the attack on Dr. Rowley and Emile Elias made in the Senate by Michael Annissette - the INDEPENDENT Senator who said 'Dr Rowley I eh 'fraid you'! Is that how a person who is the beneficiary of this Presidential appointment behave in the senate of this country?

Is this Senator contributing anything positive to the governance of this country?

"Is this Senator

"Is this Senator contributing anything positive to the governance of this country?"

Clearly not. This character has form and motive and he is neither independent nor a representative of the labour sector, and I have already suggested his fortwith removal. See my submission yesterday, which is reproduced hereunder:

Submitted by The Prince on 1 October 2009 - 5:04am.

I suggest President Richards revoke this clown's appointment as an Independent Senator with immediate effect. He was supposed to represent Labour's interests responsibly, among other things, not to defend tooth and nail blue-eyed Hart and those protecting him for whatever reasons. Prof Richards could do this one decent act before he goes, and redeem his Office a little.

Then Manning could recommend Annisette for appointment to the Senate as soon as he causes a vacancy on the Gov't benches to be created.

My friend, keep hammering

My friend, keep hammering away, as we can never tell if and when the President may wake up and see what's really going on and say, 'heck to those who attempt to control me .. I have had enough' and will do the right thing - Revoke the appointment of Mr. Annisette as an Independent Senator.
- Failing this, you and I may have to go knocking on that run-down shack he is occupying, a far cry from our P.M. palace.
We expect those sitting in positions of power to be professionals and operate ethically, but I see we have a long way yet to go.

"...if and when the

"...if and when the President may wake up..".

My Friend, are you saying that the President is one of those "sleepers" like Alice in Wonderland? Or like one of your flower buds waiting for its petals to burst open from its case? Stranger things have been known to happen, but I do admire your abiding faith. Please keep the faith or we will soon despair, or even disappear among the "desaparecidos".

To drag on and die a natural death. Jail ent nice is only for opposition politicians. Where are,

1) The Integrity Commission
2) Enquiry into Karen’s conflict of interest.
3) T&TEC Report
4) Biche Report

The government is playing us like a fiddle. On one side you have the government saying it wants to go ahead on the other side you have a State Enterprise in court trying to stop it. The strategy is simple. Delay, Delay, Delay. Kill, Kill, Kill.
