Deputy political leader of Congress of the People (COP) Prakash Ramadhar describes as an "international embarrassment," the halting of the Commission of Enquiry into the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott) and the construction sector. He was speaking to reporters during his walk through San Fernando Market yesterday, to encourage people to join them in their campaign against implementation of the property tax.
They walked through the streets of San Fernando, giving out "Axe the tax" jerseys, flyers and stickers. Ramadhar said: "It's an international embarrassment....I think that they were surprised at the enormity of the corruption which was unearthed in the inquiry, and they do not wish to have a formal laying of the report by Mr Uff, who has proven himself to be a man of great integrity and strength, in the face of all the problems, to carry on with the work."
Ramadhar called on acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert to launch an investigation into the allegations of corruption. "You have the power to get the sworn testimony. It is already available. Launch a criminal investigation. You do not have to wait on the report from the commission," he added.
