OWTU renews call for Annisette’s head

Published: 11 Oct 2009

Calls for the resignation of Independent Senator Michael Annisette are gaining momentum. Annisette, who sits on the board of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott), is continuously defending the state enterprise, and insists that neither he nor the board has done anything wrong, and so would not resign. Yesterday, Ancel Roget, president general of Oilfield Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU), renewed the call for Annisette, a former trade unionist, to resign. Annisette is president of the National Trade Union Centre and the Seamen and Waterfront Workers’ Trade Union. “We feel he should resign and set an example if he really represents labour.” Roget said Udecott’s entire board should resign, and if not, then President George Maxwell Richards should revoke their appointments. “That board is a rogue elephant, and we feel they have abdicated their responsibility,” Roget said.

It was reported by a daily newspaper, last week, that Annisette was called in by the President to a meeting on October 6. The meeting was called because of Annisette’s interventions regarding Udecott and because of the letter which businessman Emile Elias wrote to the President, asking that Annisette be removed. Opposition Senator Wade Mark also said Annisette should resign on moral grounds. “It’s not about personality. In so far as the constitution is concerned, this gentleman ought never to be in Parliament, according to section 42(2),” Mark said.

That section says:
“Parliament may provide that, subject to such exceptions and limitations, if any, as may be prescribed, a person shall be disqualified for membership of the Senate by virtue of: “(a) his holding or acting in any office or appointment, either individually or by reference to a class of office or appointment.” Mark said Parliament was supposed to bring appropriate regulations with regard to that section. Though that had not been done, he said, “over the years there has been a practice that once you are a director or counsellor on a state board or institution, you could not be a senator.”

It is extremely doubtful

It is extremely doubtful that Mr. Michael Annisette is capable of adequate objectivity to recognise his odious stance.
Soon we shall see what stuff the President is made of.
His skills in official appointments seem unduly flawed.
Hopefully he may perceive support for decisive action in the public chorus for Mr. Annisette's replacement.

Haven't we already seen what this President is made of? Remember his silence when the Integrity Commission was disintegrating before ours and his holidaying eyes? Remember the contempt he treated the citizens with in his address(?) to the nation? Remember the insult of our intelligence to the nation?

He still is showing what he is made of.

A fish musn't swim, a bird musn't fly, a man musn't walk? You remember the name they used to give the port: some party group or the other? I'm not sure if I'm labelling the man correcty.

You can never tell if and when Mr. Manning will tune you in and get the message telling him what to do.
He just might listen.
Stranger things have been known to happen.
Mr. Annisette must go!

Is Annisette a trade unionist or not? Anyhow, why have these trade unions been so tardy in their call for this man to resign? They should petition the President to revoke his appointment as an independent senator and convene an emergency meeting of NATUC to remove him from the presidency of their umbrella organisation.

Sunday's message for UDECOTT, Annisette and NATUC:

"No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

YOU ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT TO

YOU ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT TO DIVIDE -

You allow the government to divide and conquer you. The close down of BWIA should have been your clarion call, that you would be next. The government team of highly qualified and highly paid advisors came up with a master plan to,

1) Divide the Opposition, cut off the head.
2) Divide the Unions, give special privileges to some.
3) Divide the Judiciary.
4) Divide the Business Community, Direct Competition in the housing market drove up cost and bust some private projects.
5) Divide the Media, purchase or give license and lucrative ads to chosen stations.

So far only 1, 2 and 5 have been successful. The Law Association and the CJ, Sharma and Archie, has so far foiled 3. The Chamber and The Manufacturers Association have foiled 4. What might save us is the money done; you need vast sums of money to implement these plans.
