UNC drops charges against dissident MPs

Published: 21 Oct 2009

Dissident United National Congress (UNC) Members of Parliament Jack Warner, Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and Winston “Gypsy” Peters have been spared expulsion from the party.

Yesterday, the 25 charges which were each slapped on the dissidents were dropped during a preliminary hearing before the disciplinary committee at the party’s Rienzi Complex headquarters. This clears the way for Warner to contest the post of chairman, which Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday currently holds, at the party’s internal elections tentatively set for January 24, 2010. The date of the elections will be confirmed on October 25. The three were ordered to appear before the committee because of a fracas on March 22, in which there were fist fights and scuffles when the Ramjack team allegedly attempted to have their supporters attend a party congress. Speaking with reporters after yesterday’s hearing, Warner said he felt vindicated, while Maharaj said their next step was the party’s internal elections.

But Peters repeated his call for Panday to step down. Maharaj explained that the disciplinary committee met yesterday to decide whether to proceed with the disciplinary charges against them. “We made certain submissions today before them,” he said. “I made it on behalf of myself...Mr Om Lalla and Mr Kelvin Ramkissoon appeared for Mr Warner, and Jagdeo Singh appeared for Winston Peters.” He said they were able to convince the committee that it had no jurisdiction to proceed with the charges “for reasons of bias and there were no witnesses and the charges should be dismissed and they withdrew the letter which required us to attend to answer the charges.” He said the committee found that there was no basis to proceed with the charges and would recommend to the executive that they could not proceed with the charges against them.

Ramjack’s next move
Maharaj, MP for Tabaquite, said the next step would be the internal elections which should be fair and transparent, in which the public and members of the party would have confidence in. “We want to make it quite clear, we are UNC, we not leaving the UNC, we are remaining in the UNC,” he said. “We believe that the UNC can be the political vehicle to take the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. “You would have seen in the Parliament how we operate, in that we have taken the war to the PNM, we have Mr Manning on the run, the backbench has become the front bench of the Opposition. And we intend to continue with our message of change and our movement for change.” Asked whether this was the first step for reconciliation, Maharaj said they were always interested in reconciliation, but it must be based on principles and the principles of change. He said whether or not they would fight the internal elections was premature.

The next step is to replace

The next step is to replace Basdeo Panday as chairman and political leader of the UNC at the party's internal elections . Jack Warner as chairman and Maharaj as political leader .
The PNM can be defeated in the next general election but the opposition parties must unite . I believe that Basdeo's supporters in the UNC will convince him to put country before self and step aside . The UDeCOTT scandal is going to help defeat the PNM .

ok Lets stop beating up on

ok Lets stop beating up on Panday now, as imagine what ideas it took and planning and consultations, he had help put in place to get a UNC. Its mainly his party, the head of it in a democratic set up. There are some bloggers like the 2 Ms out there, dont know how he/she came on the scene now and another M both beat up Panday in a microcosym when we look at marco politics of the Govt. Given time and procedures, like the UNC is showing now, the UNC will get together again to be a much stronger force as Opposition party. One hopes that the UNC can get real strong in unison, in agreement and show a strong front with all the brains in the team working together.

Panday is a good thinker. He will make the right decisions. My family know Panday from ages ago, from my father, my mother, grand mother, grandfather (all deceased now), my brothers, our several interlocking villages& residents- all like him. He has done a lot for our villages and some on personal terms. They will be happy to see him decide his future and help decide the future of the UNC, that leaves him with integrity. So just give the guy sometime to come to terms with the processes he has to help implement to get a good compromise for the opposition. Good luck Mr Panday.

Wiggins leave people

Wiggins leave people business (T&T) and mine yuh own (B'dos)! As I have already pointed out to you previously, allyuh Bajan boldface, challenging we for maritime borders, and now interfering with we politics!

Wiggins, my friend, your

Wiggins, my friend, your comments are generally very valuable, especially coming from an outsider. But take a bit of advice - Sit in the Viewing Gallery for a while, and watch the goings-on. I am sure you will enjoy yourself. At the right time you can jump back into this UNC organization or re-organization. Keep your attention on the other stuff. Will miss you though. (Gardenia)

Gardenia, well said. I

Gardenia, well said. I quite like Wiggins; enjoyed teasing him in the past with a little banter, no disrepect meant. He is free and welcome to comment on any issue he chooses to.

Waay Sah! Allyuh ppl chase

Waay Sah! Allyuh ppl chase de Baje from blogging about UNC.

Sorry to disagree on this.

Sorry to disagree on this. This Guardian website is not restricted to Trinis only or to pro-UNC comments. We strive to safeguard our cherished freedom of speech and we should allow the same principles for those who might not share our views. That is what democracy is about. I think that suggesting that Wiggins should consider this blog site off limits smacks of insularism.

I hold no brief for Wiggins and I'm sure he can defend his rights for himself. But please let us deal with issues, not personalities.

So true, they all bashing

So true, they all bashing Wiggins and want to speak about demoracy and freedom...well dat is jus what he doing, getting in his two cents like everyone else!!! Unlike some of the really, really foolish comments many ah dem so called Trini's does be making, who ever gave dem ah computer....but dat ah another topic for another day!! You go rite on Wiggins cause yuh know dey reading it..lolol.

The problem I personally

The problem I personally have with Wiggins is that he blatantly advertises himself as being from Barbados and goes on to criticise and badmouth in the most humiliating way fellow Trinbagonians and their institutions on a Trinbago website. To me as a Trinbagonian it doesn't matter whether it's the UNC, PNM or COP, I can't accept this.

If you 'ah trini too' are pleased with this behaviour that's your choice. All families (including the Trinbago family) will have their fair share of bickering, backbiting and problems, however no right thinking family or its individual members will put up with an outsider bad mouthing any of their own.

Stewpeas, it's not that I

Stewpeas, it's not that I like when people "bad mouth" my own people, or say thing I totally disagree with, its just that they have that right, like it or hate it, its called freedom of speech. God help us if we start persecuting everyone who speaks words we disagree with! Disagreements happen all the time at, work, play, home, family, etc, etc, part of life we have to deal with as sensible, understanding adults....:))

SaD Trini, please my

SaD Trini, please my friendly blogger - "nice words, treating others with respect" are the guidelines we must follow.
Wiggins is interested in the affairs of T&T, reads our news and is simply exercising his right to contribute. We may not like what he may say from time to time, and when this happens we let him know.
I don't think that you meant any harm, as you may simply have been teasing, but your words may offend. I hope I have not offended in the process. Enjoy your day ... Smile!
Gardenia

SaD Trini - I do apologise.

SaD Trini - I do apologise. It seems as though I was misguided in my commentary to you above. It now appears clear that you were resoponding to The Prince, who was responding to my comments. You used 'pigeon english' which I was not able to comprehend accurately, and I assumed that you were making fun of Wiggins. Without intending to cause chaos, I tried to make peace by addressing my concerns to your attention. But what I seem to have done was put my foot in my mouth. Sorry, if I cause any flack coming your way.
Gardenia

Gardenia, Wiggins never

Gardenia, Wiggins never makes any valuable comments, especially when it comes to the UNC, Panday or indians. He is very biased and one sided, I have warned him on several occasions to mind his own business and leave ours (T&T's) business alone, but of course, as you can see, he does not listen.
It is always a pleasure though to read your comments, do have a nice day.

Obehwoman, glad to read that

Obehwoman, glad to read that you enjoy my comments. Feedback is always welcomed.
Now, when it comes to my Wiggins I beg to disagree. Yes he has uttered some unwarranted comments, and offended some of us. But we have been communicating in a civil manner for quite a while now and I do find it interesting to read his comments. When he steps out of line I let him know, and he has not reacted negatively. I cannot speak for other bloggers, but I don't think that he is a 'vicious' contributor. May be misguided sometimes; and I am sure I fall in there sometimes too.
Now I hope that I have not offended you in the process of defending Wiggins.
Enjoy your day.
Gardenia

Gardenia, your responses to

Gardenia, your responses to SaDTrini & Obeahwoman confirm my very early perception that you are a true diplomat and peace-broker. I am now going to recommend you for that vacant post of High Commissioner to the Court of St James, which Manning was going to offer Rowley as a bribe to shut him up. Remember when ONR/NAR Assam was Robbie's minister of Trade, Robbie sent him there to get him out of the way? But that is not my intention in your case. Then half-way through the posting Assam gave up the job and returned to T&T and later teamed up with Panday until he started to advise Panday from early on to step down.

Please keep up the good work and continue to maintain your objectivity and civility.

The Prince - Thanks for your

The Prince - Thanks for your observations. When you have been through WW1 and WW11, like I have you learn how not to let others walk in front of a speeding bus; even though I may go full speed ahead and ignore the warnings I give others. We all start off with an empty slate - and over the years I got lots written on mine.
Keep smiling my friend. Life is too short.
Gardenia

Gardenia, I see you've been

Gardenia, I see you've been through WWI & WWII. I only made it to Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Sorry to see you got caught in the crossfire; As your pal Manning would say: "collateral damage", maybe even "friendly fire". But never mind, just keep soldiering on. At the end of the tunnel there might be some light. I warned a long time ago to dig in, we're in for a long campaign of trench warfare. At least, the skirmish gave Panday bashing a diversion. He who runs away, lives to fight another day. Do like El Cid when he retreated only to turn around and counter attack his foe; a case of the hunter becoming the hunted. Good military strategy.

In my time we used discarded slate from the roof with a little broken piece to write with. When the slate was full, a little spittle worked magic. Later we graduated to a nicely framed store slate. But we learned to write and do sums and if you didn't learn was licks. So, we had good incentive to learn. Don't think it did too much harm.

Gardenia, let it run off

Gardenia, let it run off like water on a duck's back. You have done nothing to apologise for or to feel sorry about. As you say, chin up, shoulders back.

The Prince.

I'm probably not reading

I'm probably not reading this blog right or in the correct sequence, but I got the impression that Sad Trini was commenting on Gardenia's thread to Wiggings. I like how everyone ganged up on Sad Trini to treat him as if he/she was trying to stop Wiggings from making comments on the UNC. Kill the messenger! I'll attend your funeral Sad Trini.

Bachanal in Central - Thanks

Bachanal in Central - Thanks for pointing out the error.
I may still be wrong, but on double checking after reading your critique I believe that SaD Trini was responding to The Prince who was responding to my request to Wiggins. If you did not notice, my comments to Wiggins was not to chase him away, but simply to ask him to refrain for a while.
You could have pointed this out to me without getting prepared to attend a funeral. The use of 'pigeon english' created the problem for me as I get the impression that he was making fun of Wiggins in Bajan slang. The rest of the comments were not directed at SaD Trini but rather at Wiggins - rather negatively I might add. Since you are preparing for a funeral, you may be attending mine.
Thank you. Gardenia

Pleease don't cast any

Pleease don't cast any spells on me..lol, but even though you often disagree with him (wiggins) dosen't he have the same right to voice his opinions as you do, or is it ok for "only Trini's" to make silly comments??

Gardenia , I will NOT be

Gardenia , I will NOT be sitting in the viewers gallery and you will not miss me because I am not leaving , as Denise Plummer would say :"Me nah leaving" . The Trinidad Guardian online is for readers and bloggers , universally . I will continue to read and blog here because we are one family , trinbagonians and bajans . My bajan aunt and my oldest trini born cousin are buried in Couva . Another trini born cousin , Capt Anthony Hamilton for many years was employed by the now defunct BWIA . Corporate T&T , has invested billions of dollars in Barbados . Barbados imports plenty more from T&T than it exports to T&T . We are members of CARICOM , the Caribbean Development Bank , the West Indies Cricket Team , the UWI , etc . Gardenia , you and the other bloggers whom are of the opinion that only trinbagonians should blog here , on issues pertaining to T&T , are doing harm to Caribbean Integration. Many bajans read this newspaper , eventhough I maybe the only one posting blogs . I am the holder of a CARICOM Passport and within the next 5 years , all of us will have . Many bajans , including yours truely , visits T&T on a regular basis , Chaguanas is my favourite place , especially for shopping .

Wiggins - you have the right

Wiggins - you have the right to make your own decisions, and not be bullied by anyone. However, if you read my comments to you at the very top, you will notice that it was not meant to chase you away, but rather to ask that you refrain for a while. It was simply a positive friendly request. But apparently you did not see it in the manner in which it was sent. I guess that since I stepped out of line and made a civil request of you, I left myself open for you to dump on me. I get your message loud and clear to 'mind my own business'. I can live with that.
The other bloggers addressed their concerns directly to you, so why did you find it necessary to single me out of the lot to address your comments to me? Just wondering. (Gardenia)

Gardenia, may I humbly

Gardenia, may I humbly suggest we draw a line on this one? People have said what they feel and we should leave it there and move on.

Hope you don't mind my little advice at this point. There are more important issues than this needless distraction.

Totally agree with you

Totally agree with you Prince....best thing I've read all day!!!!

Wiggins you have my full

Wiggins you have my full support 100% to not only voice your opinion about TnT, but about any topic you so choose! The last time I checked we are a "democracy" so you have that freedom without having your head blown off (even though some may want your head), besides there are MANY SO CALLED TRINI's who don't even follow the going on's in TnT, let alone read the newspapers! And the last time I checked, the Guardian online is a free for all....at least I hope so....!

OMG....Gardenia see what

OMG....Gardenia see what happen now,Wiggins start to tell he nancy story as to why he is so concerned about Trinidad business....all he dead family and how he like to shop in Chaguanas.
Wiggins ole boy we tired hear that story some ah we know it by heart....still doesn't give you the right to interfere when it is about Panday, the UNC or some Indian person.

And the UNC sideshow

And the UNC sideshow continues much to the amusement of the national audience. These people really jokey in truth, playing around in the political la la land of Rienzi garden, prancing around gleefully, plucking flowers here and there and tossing them according to Panday's fancy. Aha! here is a five-leaf clover. Let's see.....I love you, I love you not, I love you, I love you not, I love you........ Tradition has it that finding a five-leaf clover brings considerable luck usually associated with money.

And the PNM sideshow

And the PNM sideshow continues...but wait, its not really a sideshow, but a main attraction of crime, corruption, greed, lies, deceipt and wanton disregard of the people...and it's not to our amusement but to our destruction!

Alix apparently PNM has

Alix apparently PNM has found that five leaf clover that tradition speaks of, the one associated with money... our money, don't you think.

Considering the amount of

Considering the amount of money involved, (much much more than Jack's pocket)it may very well be a bouquet.

It's good to see that some

It's good to see that some of the infighting and internecine warfare within the UNC is drawing to a close. But you have to ask was it a political decision or a legal one. And recent decisions in the magistrates' court readily spring to mind.

But I wish them luck with this fragile peace so they can concentrate on the major issues facing the country such as Udecott with all its attendant tentacles affecting corruption, squandermania, crime, upsidedown approach to development, lack of and neglect of basic facilities and amenities and so on.

But there are still a few wildcards out there. One of them is whether Panday has given his "blessings" to the findings of the disciplinary committee and whether on his return he would have this committee disbanded and appoint another or just ignore their findings. Not so long ago when Gopeesingh and others called for his re-instatement in the Parliament, he strongly reprimanded them for this. He virtually told them they should mind their own business.

Another wildcard is how this latest move impacts on the COP leadership and their recent demarches to find common ground with UNC elements. With a regrouped UNC, COP will find it more difficult to appeal to UNC to join them. On the other hand, UNC will be calling on COP to re-join them. The big question is who will blink first. And most important of all, will Panday agree to go quietly into retirement to facilitate opposition unity and strength.

The population which is becoming more and more disenchanted with and betrayed by the PNM and its leadership will be waiting anxiously to see how things move forward.

British PM Harold Wilson once said a week in politics is a long time. And there are many weeks and months to go before the next local and general elections. We can only wait and hope that good sense will prevail or be more proactive and knock some heads together.

The Prince - Well

The Prince - Well said:-
Could not have said it better.
Mr. Panday will be Mr. Panday. Don't think that anyone can change this. However, he is just ONE individual in a party of many. They have to work around him if necessary. No head-on clashes or public displays of the 'bully in the school yard'.
A good leader draws out the best in his people: NOT tell them what to do. It's called democracy. But he/she needs great followers: - educated & intelligent individuals; and may I add, have the interest of the people and country as their top priority. Even though we have seen some 'circus' behaviour from time to time, there are still many who can pull the troops together. They have to keep their eyes on the 'pot of gold' at the end of the rainbow, ignoring silly distractions. We need a strong opposition to keep this gov't in check: while at the same time they can work on strengthening their own resolve.
"We can throw stones
Complain about them
Stumble on them
Climb over them, OR
Build with them."

Gardenia

Thank you, Gardenia. Time

Thank you, Gardenia. Time to move on a bit now with cautious optimism. What we need now is more building, less or no further destruction; more action and less mouthing, especially spouting and verbal diarrhoea and laundering dirty underwear in public. But in the end there can only be one true leader for all to rally round. But who will be that leader? That's the billion dollar question. In my time I have seen so many promising and aspiring leaders who once tasting the aphrodisiac and elixir of power turn their backs on the people on whose backs they ascended to such heights, only to treat them with such scorn and disdain and to insult their intelligence. The jury is still out. And I'm still keeping my powder dry and my options open until the fat lady sings.

Have agood day.

I agree that Panday should

I agree that Panday should be given a lot of credit for what he has done is being a voice representing the people, and for establishing a political party. No easy feats.

He is destroying his own legacy, his own memory. Our children know nothing of his struggles and triumphs except those which continue to make him appear less and less relevant.

The UNC is too close to Panday's heart, he is not able to make objective decisions. It is not HIS party, although he did in fact found it, and I think he should be allowed to hold a post of influence and with advisory capacity. I do think too that he needs to relinquish the post of Political Leader if he is serious about country first.

The COP votes in the last elections were not just people who rejected the PNM, it was also the people who rejected the UNC's (aka Panday's) way of doing things. The were afraid of that monopoly of power at the higher level.

If the runnings of a political party can be engineered so that someone who feels entitled cannot be touched, what does that imply for the running of the nation?

If he doesn't want to give in to Ramjack, he should consider the worthy Kamla. She has held herself with great dignity, and shown great ability to be a mover and shaker with sound judgement. She has the respect of all parties - no easy feat.

But change has to come, and it must be believable change. Change that people can believe will last. This is not personal, and I am not against Mr Panday. This is just an objective look at the ability of the UNC to win the next election, and it won't happen with Panday at the helm.

Remember the PNM did not have the majority of votes! The UNC and COP combined far far outnumbered the PNM's votes. People are tired of the PNM. They want a viable option that they can believe in, and they have demonstrated that they would like to lean UNC, but have serious reservations about a Panday-led UNC.

Glad to see that you have

Glad to see that you have echoed most of what I have been saying for a very long time now. We must learn when to pass the baton without fumbling. It's the only sensible thing to do for the good of the country. No individual is more important or bigger than the country. This country has been built on the toil, sweat, blood and tears of all of our ancestors and we must do what we have to do to preserve their legacy and use it as a foundation for genuine further progress and development and nation-building.

Remember what President Kennedy said: "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country..." Very inspiring words indeed.

Trinigirl_00 - intelligent

Trinigirl_00 - intelligent commentary:-
The record of Mr. Panday in serving this nation is not one that we should take lightly. He has had an exemplarly service record. But we must now take stock of what's going on. Assess, analyse, regroup, etc. and ask ourselves the question - 'Is it working?' and if the answer is 'NO', then we must work on fixing that which is broken. We have no other alternatives. My lady Kamla is someone who should be looked at carefully, as she may be able to rise above the fray, championing the cause. But there may be others - have to wait and see. We have to leave personal emotions and loyalties out of this decision making process - look at it as a business transaction - going for the best options available to make the final choice. The only loyalty should be to PEOPLE AND COUNTRY - Top Priority!
We need our country to get back on a steady footing, before it is too late.
Thanks my dear.

There are many things that

There are many things that can be said about Jack Warner. However, one of them is NOT consistency and reliability of behaviour. The traits that citizens want in a LEADER are reliability and honesty. Regrettably, despite his flamboyance, Mr. Warner has shown himself to be otherwise (as Fairplay has clearly pointed out).

What is he all about? Football or Politics ? Is he there for himself or the people ?

One thing we can count on - Jack's erratic behaviour.

Having said that, Mr. Panday himself has done his bit for this country (along the lines of Butler and Reinzi). Nevertheless, it is time for him to take stock of the situation, and become what he is - the elder statesman of his party. Listen to public opinion and pass the baton gracefully to a younger, but experienced member of his party.

Any votes for Kamla ?

KAMLA

KAMLA is a very good choice even COP wants her. Ramesh on the other hand is noticably absent in the COP equation. There seems to be unwillingness from COP to take the RAM-ING from JACK. Where are we now is it,

All said and done Jack have

All said and done Jack have he supporters....in Barbados.
Wiggins and all he family.

"Spared Expulsion"!!!!

"Spared Expulsion"!!!! Indeed!!!

There was NEVER any chance of expulsion. Panday knew it, Ramesh knew it, Jack knew it, Subash knew it, Mikela knew it and most of all, Oma knew it. Twenty-five charges, all dropped. The destruction of the opposition, the waste and illegal practices by UDECOTT backed by the PM... if all these things were not so tragic for the country, it would be very funny indeed. But people's lives are affected and this is no laughing matter.
What is tragically funny though is all these people so believing that Panday can take the opposition into government that they willing to accept the words coming out of Rienzi complex. Some even claim to know Panday for a long long time. And they STILL have faith that he will do the right thing!!!!! Panday is a very likeable fellow. That much is true, I have heard it said and seen it for myself. But his being likeable and his personal desires will forever be at loggerheads... at opposing poles. And it is this that persons close and not close to him will never ever understand, hence their perpetual confusion.
The charges have been dropped, but have they been dismissed? All that has happened is a legal battle has been averted. Not a single one of those charges could have stood up in any court. All the UNC legal minds knew this. Some people breathing a sigh of relief, some even seeing reconciliation!!!! Panday and his cohorts are regrouping and a new strategy has already been formulated. You think they call him the silver fox because of his hair? RAMESH MAHARAJ AND JACK WARNER AND THEIR FELLOW UNC DISSIDENTS WILL NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HOLD ANY POSITION IN THE UNC EXECUTIVE. Mark dem words. As disliked as this poster is among UNC sycophants here (and believe me, that is a good thing, a gauge telling me that I am on the right track), those who know, truly know Panday and his UNC, KNOW that past performances of the UNC internal "elections" will see the same results. Panday eh like the results, and will act against it, order a recount on who he eh like, get somebody with a vested interest to validate the results in Panday's favour - just as he did when he had Warner, a one-man election recount committee, validate the results against Yetming in favour of Vasant Bharath, as well as others - which was somehow made ratified and made legal by an ex-judge. What changed since then? Did Warner suddenly get sense? Not really, his interests different this time around. The positive side to his back and forth switching of loyalties is that it could have the desired effect of seeing Mr. Panday GONE, which will be good for the nation since only after Panday is gone will the PNM then have a real fight on its hands, a fight which it may well lose... also, good for the nation.

The comedy that is the Un-united Nation Congress continues. The 77 year old crook going down in flames! But he will have it no other way, reading people was never EVER one of his strong points.

EXCELLENT STRATEGY

EXCELLENT STRATEGY -

JACK I must congratulate the foolproof strategy. You state in advance that they cannot charge you and you will take them to court. If they charge you they are being dictatorial, if they don’t charge you they never had a case. You call for elections. You state in advance the election will be unfair. If you win you say it is the voice of the people and you have been vindicated. If you lose you say I told you so and take it to court. What happened when you withdrew your court case strategy to charge them does the same reasoning apply or in this case people beg yuh not to? When you charge the reason good, when others charge they are dictatorial or unfair sounds like Manning. So you in a position where you can do what yuh want and nobody can tell you anything. I wonder if that is tolerated at the Centre of Excellence and FIFA. I remember yuh cuss up and fire Roy Agustus and other staff for joining COP. Was that dictatorial and unfair? So it is do as I say but not as I do.
You so unfair you could be black like me. Who is the real DICTATOR?

Another spin play by the UNC

Another spin play by the UNC to get the dissidents back into the fold,by doing this, the mouth pieces of Panday can begin to negotiate and soften his critics before internal elections, thus preventing a challenge to Panday for the chairmanship of the party. It may work well towards softening the dissidents, if party unity is constantly preached to Warner,Maharaj and Peters it may well be one happy family again.Cunning move by the UNC.
