Bas: No change on Privy Council stand

Published: 2 Nov 2009

Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday says he does not expect the United National Congress’ position on the retention of the Privy Council to change, after his meeting with Prime Minister Patrick Manning tomorrow morning. Panday said this in an interview yesterday. Manning has invited Panday for closed-door talks at the Prime Minister’s residence, St Ann’s. Manning had promised more than a year ago that he intended to hold discussions with Panday to discuss, among other things, the need to have the Caribbean Court of Justice replace the Privy Council as the country’s final court of appeal.

Panday said yesterday that he can see no reason why his party’s position on that issue should change during the talks with Manning. Panday only last month identified several reasons for his continued objection to having the CCJ as this country’s highest court of appeal. He said he court lacked confidence and should be made an intermediate court instead. But Panday said he is attending the talks “with an open mind.”

the law Lords at the Privy

the law Lords at the Privy Council in London are telling us that we should stop going there but Panday don't want to let go of the colonial ties . The CCJ will make our political indepedence a reality , but to date , only Barbados and Guyana have it as their highest court . When the UNC was in power , Panday supported the CCJ , but now he is saying that it is not good enough to be the final Court of Appeal for T&T .

THAT IS NOT TRUE

THAT IS NOT TRUE -

That is if you believe Ramesh who on a morning TV show indicated that the Privy Council indicated that historically it was an arrangement and they will continue as long as it is needed. One Law Lord of the Privy Council made a statement but that was not the official view of the Home Office. You so want to incriminate Panday you would not say that Ramesh supports the keeping of the Privy Council. This I find very dishonest and underhand. Panday and Jack supported the bail out of the HCU. Ramesh and Panday supports the keeping of the Privy Council. From the way you project you give the impression that Panday alone is doing something wrong, because you support RAMJACK. GOD Bligh me man that is not right.
