MP suggests non-lethal weapons for escort cops

Published: 2 Nov 2009

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner is against a move to provide bulletproof vests for prisoners. Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert announced last week that a decision was taken to provide certain prisoners with extra security, after the recent killing of murder accused Peter Garcia, as he was being escorted by police from Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court on October 18. In a response yesterday, Warner said the breakdown in law and order was the result of the inability of the police to do their job efficiently and effectively.

Warner said the vest may prevent someone from being killed, but it would not stop the root causes of citizens being in illegal possession of guns and ammunition. On the issue of weapons for Court and Process officers, Warner said the officers could carry non-lethal weapons such as tasers. He said such weapons would reduce the number of fatal police shootings.

Tasers??? Politicians and

Tasers??? Politicians and their follies. In a shootout how would the police aim their tasers? They are limited to no more than 35 feet. Is Mr. Warner aware tasers' effectiveness are in question now by most police depts worldwide? Is he also aware that chasing after bad guys and having in his position only a taser would severely increase the risk of death to the officer? The majority of countries in the world, first world or not, provide armed prisoner escorts outside of prison. The prisoner is shackled in such a manner as to hinder his ability to tussle with his escorts and seized their weapon.

That the police commissioner's only solution to prevent a re-occurrence of the shooting of the prisoner was to suggest that the prisoner escort units remain unarmed and instead the prisoners be supplied with bulletproof vests (while this is common in developed countries, the escorting officers remain armed) shows his inability to think outside the box. This is precisely why a commissioner of police from outside the police force or even outside of the country can be a good thing. Not necessarily the best thing... but a good thing nonetheless. We need new ideas and new practical solutions to law enforcement in Trinidad. Don S. NY
