?Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner is against a move to provide bulletproof vests for prisoners. Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert announced last week that a decision was taken to provide certain prisoners with extra security, after the recent killing of murder accused Peter Garcia, as he was being escorted by police from Rio Claro Magistrates' Court on October 18. In a response yesterday, Warner said the breakdown in law and order was the result of the inability of the police to do their job efficiently and effectively.
Warner said the vest may prevent someone from being killed, but it would not stop the root causes of citizens being in illegal possession of guns and ammunition. On the issue of weapons for Court and Process officers, Warner said the officers could carry non-lethal weapons such as tasers. He said such weapons would reduce the number of fatal police shootings.
