Dick-Forde: Hart attacks brand Govt as corrupt

Planning Minister Dr Emily Dick-Forde says the unrelenting bombardment and comments by “oppositional personalities” on the Calder Hart/Udecott controversy are intended to pre-empt the findings of the Uff Commission of Enquiry into Udecott and the Construction Sector. She said so in a statement yesterday, one day after she told reporters the nation should be ashamed for hounding former executive chairman of the Urban Development Corporation of T&T (Udecott) Calder Hart from office. Hart resigned on Saturday and left the country after documents alleging he had family ties with two officials of the construction firm Sunway, which was given a $368.9 million contract by Udecott to construct the Legal Affairs Towers in Port-of-Spain. Dick-Forde said: “The clear intention is to spread alarm among the nation and to have a man and his family, the directors of an organisation, as well as the Government, all branded as corrupt and even criminal, with no legal process to support such statements.”
She added: “The nation’s soul is affected by those bold infringements on a person’s right to fairness in matters of this nature. “What we are witnessing today violates the procedures established in the Constitution to conduct such investigations and descends into a vigilante-style approach with a pretence at speaking for the ordinary people.” Dick-Forde said the people of T&T “should not seek to pre-empt and eclipse the legal channels for dealing with issues under the law. “Such actions appear to have the sole objective of triggering some abortion of the tenure of the duly-elected Government.” She said now was not the time for celebration but “deep reflection and contemplation at what is happening in this situation and even in the matter of the freedom of association issues as well. “The soul of our nation is at stake in this matter,” she added.

While you are hanging your hat demanding "legal process" and "a person's right to fairness" in this situation, madame, why did you not extend the same to the Hon. Dr. Keith Rowley when you joined arm-in-arm with Prime Minister Mr. Patrick Manning accusing him of 'swindling' $10M. You behaved then, like a woman 'on a mission' to discredit/destroy Dr. Keith Rowley, no hold bars. You madame speak with forked-tongue. Why defend the rights of one and indulge in attempting to destroy the other. Do you love one and hate the other? Do you have a vested interest in the survival of one, and the degradation of the other? These are pertinent questions indeed.

First of all you did not face the polls - the people did not vote you into office. The Prime Minister hand-picked you and annointed you into our Cabinet. You are not the only one, madame. We have the likes of Lenny Saith, Jerry Narace (Health), Martin Joseph (Security), Arnold Pigott (Agriculture), Hazel Manning (Local Gov't), Mariano Browne (Finance) Conrad Enille (Energy?), etc. All those were certainly not "duly-elected" by the citizens of this country or were they, but 'someone' forgot to tell us?

And in the words of Thomas Jefferson - "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
So Madame Minister Dick-Forde, I would like you to do an analysis of your position in our government and decide whether you are indeed complying with the Oath of Office you took when you swore to serve people and country. We need a Government in Office that can and will operate with transparency, accountability and ethical practices, and never be afraid to be critiqued by the people of this country.

I don’t blame Hart for resigning. The man is a technocrat, not a politician. If I were in his shoes I would’ve resigned too because the opposition has turned technical and engineering matters into a political war, and UDeCOTT was the chosen battlefield.

Ms Dick-Forde, your comments are not only insulting to the nation, they are also patronizing. The Government in charge in not comprised of any goodie-two-shoes. It appears that when the shoe is on the other foot, it is a totally different situation.
Just take a hard look at yourself and members of your party and their ongoing conduct in parliament. Do you sincerely believe that you and your party have shown any respect (or regard) for the taxpayers of this country who elected you to do a job ? You voted down a call for an investigation last week, while you continue to defend the questionable actions of Mr. Hart.
We agree with you that the Soul of the Nation is at stake - but not for the specific reason you mention ("hounding Mr. Hart out of the country). There is far more at stake here - integrity, accountability and transparency of this government.

In a very clinical way, Calder Hart and many others could be taken down quite easily as they are not all that good to eradicate a 100% of their paper trail.

Now that Calder Hart has resigned, the same people who attacked him are calling for the entire UDeCOTT board to resign.
This kind of behavior makes me wonder how much is enough? How many people and boards should resign before the likes of Rowley and Warner are comfortable?
In the past several years UDeCOTT erected many buildings that have been serving the people of T&T…what did we get from the tons of rhetoric against this company and its project? Nil, nothing.
