?A no confidence motion against Prime Minister Patrick Manning now being formulated by PNM's Diego Martin West constituency is expected to be taken to PNM's General Council in two weeks, it has been confirmed.
The motion was discussed at Monday's meeting of the executive of Diego Martin West which is represented by former minister Keith Rowley. Jane Simon, elections officer of the executive, said: "We had a meeting and we discussed some relevant issues pertaining to the Government as party in Government would do and a motion was raised but these are internal things that should go through the process in the party before it reaches outside." She declined details. Robert Cezair, who said he was authorised to speak for PNM's Diego Martin West unit, said: " I don't know anything about any motion."
Cezair added: " Our meeting was closed and I'm not at liberty to disclose constituency business publicly. What transpired on Monday was normal constituency business. "We discussed current issues in the party. There was no decision to do anything. I don't know anything about this motion talk."
A couple members of PNM's Diego Martin West executive yesterday disassociated themselves from the motion yesterday. But another Diego Martin west executive official said the motion was to be dealt with internally before it is taken to PNM's General Council. The next General Council meeting is on the afternoon of March 20. This would be preceded by another in PNM's series of mobilisation conferences at Cascadia Hotel.
PNM's other big event this month is its March 27 conference at Chaguaramas Convention Centre to mark the 100th birth anniversary of PNM founder Dr Eric Williams. PNM public relations officer Jerry Narace said yesterday he had not seen any motion. PNM chairman Conrad Enill did not reply to calls. Meanwhile, PNM Diego Martin Central chairman Dr Joe Laquis said his constituency was "not going to do things to please people who have personal vendettas." Laquis added: "We'll wait for the results of the Uff Commission on Udecott and other issues and if former Udecott head Calder Hart is vindicated, I may well ask my constituency to pass a motion calling for his reinstatement as Udecott head."
Laquis said if Hart was implicated in anything, "then the DPP and acting Police Commissioner will do their job." Laquis, who had headed the Laquetel communications outfit, had said last year that the Laquetel Building had been sold to someone who eventually sold it to Udecott. Laquis has maintained silence on the identity of the buyer who later sold it to Udecott.
Laquis, who said he was friends with Hart, added yesterday: "Not good, good friends, but friends and I also know thousands of people." He added: "PNM is 54 years old and we've been through worse situations than this. We'll wait for the Uff Report which must show what has taken place..."
