MP for Mayaro Winston "Gypsy" Peters has promised to build a fire station for his constituents within the first year of a United National Congress government.

This was among several "goodies" Peters has planned for his constituents once he wins his seat and the UNC is successful in the upcoming general election. When the UNC bandwagon rolled into Rio Claro Wednesday night, Peters said: "If my party refuses to build a fire station in Mayaro within the first year of getting in office I will walk away from them." Peters also promised that the Biche High School, which was built under the UNC government, would be opened. The school was not opened because the site was deemed unsafe.

He said his pleas to National Security Minister Martin Joseph for a new station and close circuit cameras to detect criminal elements in the constituency have fallen on deaf ears. He said that would change once his party was successful at the polls. He promised to get farmers regularised, provide water for their irrigation needs, a cold storage facility for fishermen and a 24-hour health facility.

In addition he promised to transform the Mayaro recreation ground into the eastern regional sporting facility with an Olympic-size pool and a proper fire station in Rio Claro. Accusing the Manning administration of mismanagement, he said a UNC government had spent $60 billion in six years while the PNM administration had spent $330 billion in eight years. Peters said Manning's reason for calling a general election was because his own people were turning against him because of mismanagement.
