?Questions are being asked about the appointment of the newly-selected Deputy Police Commissioner, Canadian Jack Ewatski.
According to a release yesterday, the Police Service Commission has approved the nominations of Stephen Williams, Maurice Piggott and Ewatski as Deputy Commissioners of Police on June 29. Williams' appointment as Deputy Commissioner was effective from yesterday and Piggott today and Ewatski with effect from the date of his assumption.
Deputy Police Commissioner Gilbert Reyes retired last week Monday. When contacted yesterday Reyes was enjoying time off after several extensions. Ewatski, 58, a former Chief of Police in Winnipeg, Manitoba, served 34 years in the service. A story in a Canadian newspapers claimed Ewatski's brother, Jamie, and another staffer were charged with assault in an incident in December 2004. A blog alleged his former stepson, Jess Zebrun, was charged with illegal entry and perjury.
A report said Ewatski intended to suspended his activities with a security consulting firm and as a hobby is a licensed pilot who flies small aircraft. The commission considered the order of merit list which had been established following its assessment of the candidates as prescribed by the Commissioner of Police Selection Process Order 2009, the release stated. The commission, after consultation with James Philbert, decided he would continue to act as commissioner until September 30 or until such time before the date in the event a substantive appointment is made.
