People's National Movement (PNM) candidate for the electoral district of Valsayn/St Joseph, Afiya Joyeau, says she intends to work with St Joseph MP Justice Minister Herbert Volney to ensure residents are properly served.
Joyeau was among the 134 PNM candidates who filed nomination papers on Monday to contest this month's local government election. She is contesting for a seat on the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation. She said, if elected, she would like to work with Volney "because he has a plethora of knowledge and if I can work with him it will all be for the betterment of St Joseph and Valsayn/St Joseph specifically."
She said improved drainage to prevent flooding and good roads were among the major concerns of residents of her electoral district. Joyeau said the PNM's Vision 2020 Development Plan for T&T was not only about the construction of high rise buildings but also the improvement of basic infrastructure, which touched the needs of every citizen."
She said she was not discouraged by the fact that the PNM suffered a landslide defeat by the People's Partnership in the May 24 general election. "It doesn't daunt me in the least bit because if it is that I am called to serve, whether we are in Government or whether we had lost every seat, I believe in the People's National Movement," she insisted.
Joyeau said the young voters must "step up" to ensure the PNM won the election. She added that the youths must play a critical role in any restructuring of the 54-year-old party. She hoped to bring fresh ideas to local government in T&T.
