Now St Vincent looks at free laptops for students

Dr Ralph Gonsalves

It seems the idea of free laptops for students is not confined to this country. The government of St Vincent and the Grenadines this week said it was looking at the possibility of providing laptop computers to its primary and secondary students. Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says his government has been engaging the government of Portugal to provide the computers. He said this initiative was part of the Education Revolution Programme.

Gonsalves said more than 30,000 students were expected to benefit from this project which is expected to cost the government in excess of $70 million. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace also made a similar promise. At a convention of his New Democratic Party, Eustace said if the NDP was returned to power following the next general election, he would give laptops to every primary school student. A general election is due in St Vincent and the Grenadines by March next year.

Oh sure. Angel's Kamla's

Oh sure. Angel's Kamla's wise words of nonsense have such an effect on the people of the world...

Please, this idea has been out there BEFORE the "PM Kamla" nightmare materialized. FACT IS THE PNM HAD THE IDEA LONG BEFORE BRAINLESS KAMLA BLURTED OUT THE WORD WITHOUT ANY PURPOSE OR OBJECTIVE! In T&T, this was/is a PNM idea that Kamla just plagiarized (she seems to be good at that).

INDIA HAD THE IDEA BEFORE THAT AND MANY COUNTRIES FAR AND WIDE WERE ON THAT IDEA!

So PLEASE do not credit any of this to Saint Kamla. The stupid idea to use security forces as police officers, now THAT is Kamla's idea. THAT idiocy is something we can credit this government for.

Did someone from this government, or perhaps your people, our people, send you off into a tail spin?
A bit of civility would be appreciated from time to time; don't you think? I can hope ....
Lighten up.

Let me throw a monkey wrench

Let me throw a monkey wrench into this whole Laptop discussion..
Stop the presses Sat.

India Comes Up With $35 Laptop.

MUMBAI, India | India has unveiled the prototype of a $35 computer, a basic touch-screen tablet aimed at students.

The government hopes to bring the device into production by 2011. If a manufacturer can be found, the Linux operating system computer will be the latest in a string of “world’s cheapest” innovations to hit the market out of India — home to the $2,127 compact Nano car.

Judging from the St Vincent

Judging from the St Vincent and the Grenadines government's past, Dr Ralph Gonsalves probably thinks Trinidad and Tobago should finance some large part of this initiative. Dr Ralph Gonsalves too frequently visits Trinidad and Tobago in search of money for the thought to come to T&T begging for financial aid to pay for these "FREE" laptops to have NOT entered his mind - as though anything in life is FREE.

Why's my comment flagged? Is

Why's my comment flagged? Is it untrue that Dr Gonsalves runs to Trinidad and Tobago every time he wants money for St Vincent and the Grenadines? If the guy and his government managed properly St Vincent and the Grenadines would much wealth in its treasury.

Poor management begets flagrant wastage, thus systemic State poverty. Solution, remove the mis-managers and you break the cycle of abject St Vincent and the Grenadines poverty.

Funny you should complain

Funny you should complain about another country receiving assistance from us. YOU GUYS are the same ones who support our Minister of Agriculture BROWN-NOSING the European Union for 42 million Euros to HAND OUT to 6,000 farmers.

So we here in T&T begging for HAND OUTS that does nothing for the nation, but you and your "partnership" buddies are against T&T helping out our Caribbean neighbors, who we DEPEND ON.

Keep it coming. Local elections are almost over. We will soon know the fate of this country. Will this mentality prevail or will common sense prevail.

May 24th- We were put in the firing range

July 26th- It remains to be seen...

Dude you sound like a leech.

Dude you sound like a leech. Try something groundbreaking - learning to work for your own keep. Attempting to defend the riding trini's backs by others who CAN'T fund their existence by the fruits of their own labour is P A T H E T I C. Even God believes "They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat." (Isaiah 65:22) So why should Trinis fund the lifestyle of citizens of other islands?

In 2Thessalonians 3:10-12 God says he who will not work should not eat. Read it yourself, "For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread."

If you have a problem with this take it up with God.

No you should ask God why

No you should ask God why you and so many people in T&T are such hypocrites. You say countries who are unable to support themselves shouldn't depend on other countries.

We can accept that you make such a retarded statement.

No country is able to support themselves. Every single country in the world from T&T all to way to big and powerful U.S.A depends on other countries heavily. So to blast St. Vincent, ONE OF OUR CARIBBEAN BROTHERS, for being dependent on us shows your ELITIST MENTALITY!

And that is what we have in government. "WE will rise?". Not with this bunch at all.

But, we accept that because not everybody has an open and sensible mind.

The part that INFURIATES PEOPLE is the fact that you say this, but then you will be the SAME ONE to support our Minister of Agriculture BROWN-NOSING THE EUROPEAN UNION for million$ of $$ for our sugar cane farmers.

So assisting our Caribbean neighbors is bad, but getting European money for 6,000 sugar cane farmers (not even to say real workers) is alright.

Those 6,000 people are DAMN LAZY because to STILL be poor and waiting on government money is a crying shame. It has been 8 YEARS and:

* Education is/was free
* Training is/was free
* The government has/had a long list of social programs
* New jobs is/was (the way the PP going) popping up everywhere

...and a WHOLE bunch of other programs existed to help poor people like these, but somehow they remained poor.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. You guys say the PNM was all about "hand-outs" yet this is one example of the PP giving free money to people. This government hasn't done anything in 2 months except HAND-OUT money, land and just about everything else.

The worst kind of hypocrisy is the kind that helps nobody but yourself and that is what this government is all about.

You love the idea of people

You love the idea of people riding the backs of others, excellent for you. The world is not meant to work like that however. The elderly, the infirmed, the young, they should be supported. However, ABLE BODIED PEOPLE ought to walk on their OWN TWO FEET. Whatever their mental and physical talents sow, the fruits of THAT LABOUR ought to content them. That is what they ought to reap, NOT the fruits of other peoples' efforts. That is my final ruling on this matter. I fail to see what of this you DON'T OR CAN'T UNDERSTAND. Comprehension of my stand requires ONLY a modicum of intelligence - have you not a modicum?

jason17, since you express yourself like a great leader, full of knowledge and wisdom. (high sarcasm) There is no point in continuing this discourse. Plead your cause with somebody else.

Now that pardner Manning

Now that pardner Manning gone through, Gonsalves checking out Portugal. But Portugal themselves could do with some help.

Whenever I hear or read any

Whenever I hear or read any of Ralph Gonsalves' public utterances I am reminded of 3 social science students who in 1967/'68 daily preached anti-establishment philosophy on the steps of UWI's registry building at Mona, Jamaica. They included a Trinidadian now quietly retired in Jamaica, a Grenadian & and the 3rd from the eastern Caribbean who is now the establishment! Oh how the tables have turned!
I hope that St Vincent is not expecting freebees from T&T to fulfill its student laptop agenda.

Good thing Manning not in

Good thing Manning not in power because Trinidad and Tobago would have been the target sponsor

You saying that like you are

You saying that like you are not sure ,man they probably would have chosen the same country to supply them

Nah Man uwigrad25, yuh tief
