A vote of confidence in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
That is how frontline Government Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal last night termed the People's Partnership's local government victory. "It is confidence in her manner of governance," said Moonilal, speaking at the home of victorious Penal/Debe candidate Premnath Sookoo.
He added: "It is a vote for her leadership style, of her commitment to equality and inclusiveness. She has led by example." Moonilal, Minister of Housing and Environment, termed Persad-Bissessar as a leader of "compassion and commitment. It is an endorsement of her style of governance," he added. He also interpreted the election results as rejection for the "monochromatic and arrogant PNM style." He claimed "the PNM is on the way out."
Moonilal also hailed Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma for his overall leadership of the People's Partnership campaign. "He was extremely hard-working," he added. Even before the polls, Sharma had summoned a meeting today of all elected councillors. Moonilal, who ran the San Fernando City Corporation campaign, said he was extremely pleased about the success. This is only the second time the PNM has lost control of the country's second city.
