The People's Partnership (PP) is likely to have 96 councillors throughout Trinidad, according to a preliminary report of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC).
The United National Congress (UNC) won 72 electoral districts, the initial report stated, with Congress of the People (COP) securing 24 seats. The People's National Movement (PNM) captured 37 local government constituencies, the EBC report indicated.PP is represented in all 14 corporations and would lead 11, including the municipalities of San Fernando, Arima and Chaguanas.
PNM has been shut out of four corporations–Mayaro-Rio Claro, Couva-Tabaquite-Talparo, Princes Town and Penal-Debe. Apart from winning those four corporations, PP lost one seat each in Sangre Grande, Chaguanas and Arima.Another emphatic victory took place at the Tunapuna-Piarco Regional Corporation, the local government institution with the largest geographic reach.
PP captured 12 of the 15 seats, with six each going to UNC and COP.PNM's most convincing victory was in Port-of-Spain, where the party won ten electoral districts, confining the COP to two seats. At Point Fortin, PNM won five of the six electoral districts. The results were a sharp reversal of those of 2003, in which PNM romped home victorious in nine corporations, relegating the UNC to run five.
