An impromptu visit by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to Ian Atherly’s restaurant on Monday night is fuelling speculation that he is being tipped as Mayor of San Fernando for a second time. After the People’s Partnership’s 11 to three sweeping victory in the local polls on Monday, Persad-Bissessar caused her motorcade, from her Penal constituency office to Rienzi Complex, Couva, to make a detour to Atherly’s by The Park.
Accompanied by Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal, Persad-Bissessar took a mike from one of the music trucks and addressed limers, thanking them for her government’s success. Atherly, a former mayor of San Fernando, under the People’s National Movement (PNM), mounted the local government platform during the recent campaign and endorsed the PP’s administration.
After his declaration on Harris Promenade, he actively campaigned in Marabella and in San Fernando with the PP’s successful candidates. In an interview with the Guardian, Atherly said he was offered nothing. He said Persad-Bissessar thanked him for the role he played in the PP winning the San Fernando City Corporation, which moved from one to seven electoral districts. He said he would seriously consider any opportunity offered to serve the people.
Other names, such as Dr Anirudh Mahabir, former head of the San Fernando Business Association Keiran Singh, former deputy mayor of San Fernando Rabindra Moonan and even City Corporation CEO Marlene Coudray have been put in the mix. Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma said they had made no decisions as yet on the selection of mayors or chairmen to head the 11 corporations now under their control.
Me thinks we need ELECTED
Me thinks we need ELECTED Mayors and Regional Chairpersons. If you want to serve, get nominated and present your plans and proposals to your community, and let them VOTE for you.PNM has again tainted, and made a mockery of, another crucial institution.
How could they have sat in Balisier House, and know what best for Manzanilla,Guaya,Erin,Tamana,Couva,Matelot,Los Iros,Maracas etc, etc, better than we, who live in the community every day of our lives...That's where and when we lost a sense of community!
Just take a minute to think.............how much ego it takes, for a small group of people, far less one man,to sit in POS and dictate what every nook and cranny needs in the entire nation.
Did some one say? "the centralization of power" ...." Yuh damn right, sire"
Tobago?...ANR, made sure they have,an ELECTED leader.
The PP MUST return this power to the people. All leaders of Gov't MUST BE ELECTED directly by the people.
trinitodebone.........RUM

If Artherly is the kind of
If Artherly is the kind of people this woman is gravitating around she will self-destruct. This man has no class for her to make a detour to pay him a visit at his bar. One is left to wonder what would have motivated her to to go there in the first place. It wasn't like the bar was on the way so she just dropped to to see a long time well respected and worthy friend. For the Prime Minister to go out the way to visit such a den is is rather disturbing to people who know the man Atherly.
Ahh Atherly, yuh
Ahh Atherly, yuh inside!!!
One of your reasons for leaving the PNM was that they stop visiting your business place. Look how rum go flow now at Atherly's.
Now this is intended to be
Now this is intended to be just a joke on those who say Kamla likes her takila. Maybe she was just feeling for a drink being in a celebrately mood and all ah dat. You know how the feeling goes. Just look at her eyes. Probably if we can listen to the speech her slurring voice would say it all. Everyone else in the picture has brighter and wider open eyes. But I still doubt she would consider Atherly for Mayor.
Ah want to hear dah speech.
Ah want to hear dah speech.
Ms. Coudray has shown that
Ms. Coudray has shown that she can persevere, even in the face of adversity. She is apparently well respected, and also appropriately versed in the City Corporation's structure and processes. As such, she is likely to continue to serve the Corporation in an outstanding manner, if appointed Mayor. However, would Ms. Coudray be willing to go from CEO to Mayor ?..
Let's face another reality : appointing a long-time PNM supporter (even a past one) to the position of Mayor is only likely to create conflict and generate ill-will...
Coudray for Experience
Coudray for Experience
If you had said experienced, then I could fully understand that statement. Cause you do need a good bit of experience in order to claim a bit of road reserve as your own property, and then get approval to build million dollar townhouses on it for sale to the very same public whose interests you claim to want to represent. Nothing goes unseen.

Appointing Atherly for mayor
Appointing Atherly for mayor would be a slap in the face and a step backward for San Fernando. Come Kamla you could do better than that. I say,Ms Coudray for Mayor and Dr Muradali for Deputy.
Is this even journalism ?

To appoint Atherly Mayor
To appoint Atherly Mayor would not say much for the PP human resource bank.
MFRahman
I know Atherly very well and
I know Atherly very well and he does not have capacity to deliver in such a position. He is no administrator. I think if nepotisn is not the chief criteria for the choice of a San Fernando Mayor then Atherly's name would not even come up for consideration. The obvious best choice choice would be Marlene Coudray and Navi as deputy Mayor would also be a good choice.
Aha! I knew that Ian Atherly
Aha! I knew that Ian Atherly jumped ship for a reason.
But this is all speculation so far as I do not think that the PM can look at any new bandwagonist in any serious light.
Prove your loyalty to the PP Mr Atherly.

Your friendly mayor coming back to the city corporation office. This will be interesting.
Let's hope this report is false and the mayor will actually be an elected person from our democratic process.

Like Atherly suddenly
Like Atherly suddenly stripped off his red jersey and donned a yellow one. If he wanted to be mayor, he should have contested a seat under the COP or the PP.
Isn't there someone in all
Isn't there someone in all that was Surveyed by the Peoples Partnership, who can and be able to fill the seat of MAYOR, In the CITY OF SAN FERNANDO? Has Been, Atherly, is not a fit person for Mayor of my City. If there is no one in the PP, Then find someone, who is fitting! NOT A BARKEEPER FOR MAYOR.
mentone What's wrong with

Appointing Ian Atherly ()a
Appointing Ian Atherly ()a PNM long time supporter who benefitted greatly under that administration, with numerous allegations of corruption surrounding him, as Mayor, would be an absolute slap in the face to PP supporters, especially COP supporters. Dr Muradali or Ms Coudray would be much better choices for the appointment.
I would be favorable to Ms
I would be favorable to Ms Coudray for Mayor, she have proven skills and ability to get the job done.
