PNM to name 3 mayors next week
Choice of Mayor and Aldermen for the People’s National Movement’s three corporations will be made next week after party units and constituencies confer on selections, Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown says. The PNM retained the Port-of-Spain, Point Fortin and San Juan corporations.
The party leadership met with local government candidates yesterday. Four Aldermen for the Port-of-Spain Corporation must be selected ahead of a mayor, PNM officials said yesterday. Businessman James Chin Ching, who contested the Woodbrook seat, had been tipped for the post but no longer qualifies since he was unsuccessful at the polls.
Brown has signalled his willingness to continue as mayor of the capital, if the party so wishes. However, other frontline PNM officials said yesterday that they were uncertain if this would obtain. They said in view of the popular climate for change, PNM had to make “wise” choices in concert with that. They noted that Brown had served as mayor for almost ten years and prior to that in the corporation as a councillor.

The country would benefit under his leadership.
