Port-of-Spain mayor Louis Lee Sing is urging the Government to help preserve T&T's historical sites. He made the call yesterday at the unveiling ceremony of the Woodford Square Interpretative Signage, at Woodford Square, Port-of-Spain. Four signs which were unveiled gave a brief history of the square and showed its location on a map of Port-of-Spain. The initiative was an effort by the Ministry of Tourism to sensitise people about the historical sites.
Calling Port-of-Spain "one of the most beautiful cities in the hemisphere," Lee Sing urged the Government to focus on preservation of historical building and sites, "I plead to my colleague Dr Rupert Griffith, if this year is guava season, to put aside some money to maintain our history, not only in Port-of-Spain, but for the mosque in St Joseph and the temple in the sea in Waterloo."
He said the City Corporation would be undertaking restoration works on the old library building, next to City Hall, Knox Street, Port-of-Spain. Tourism Minister Dr Rupert Griffith said his ministry would be undertaking similar projects in the Toco/Sangre Grande region. Griffith said plans were also on stream to place a sign board on Treasury Building, depicting a scene of the Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in August 1834. He said the ministry would also be enhancing the Indo-Caribbean Museum in Carapichaima.
