Days after she was beaten by a relative, an elderly woman has succumbed to her injuries at hospital.
Police said 81-year-old Mahadeo Manichan died at the Chaguanas Health Facility at 4 pm on Monday.
Officers said one of Manichan’s relatives called an ambulance after the woman complained of feeling unwell at her Coconut Drive, Pepper Sauce Village, Chaguanas home on Saturday afternoon.
As the 57-year-old relative was opening the gate for the Emergency Health Service (EHS) workers, she was attacked by the suspect, who struck her at the side of her head with a piece of steel.
The woman told police the man ran into the house and struck Manichan on her head with the steel rod.
Chaguanas police were called in and arrested the man, who they said had a history of mental issues.
Investigators said the man was originally charged with assault by beating and remanded to the St Ann’s Psychiatric Hospital. The charge will be upgraded to murder in light of Manichan’s death.
