Police were up to last night probing whether remains found in a burnt out vehicle at La Sieva Extension, Foster Road, Sangre Grande, may be that of 30-year-old Shashi Samad, who has been reported missing.
Samad, 30, of Rampartap Trace, Vega de Oropouche, Sangre Grande, was reported missing to police on Saturday by relatives.
When police conducted a search on the burnt vehicle, a Nissan Almera, information revealed that the vehicle belonged to Samad.
Guardian Media visited the bereaved family yesterday.
Samad’s mother, Parbatee Sinanan, said she could not say for sure if the bones found in the vehicle were that of her son but said the vehicle belonged to him.
She said her son, a taxi driver, operates the Vega de Oropouche/Sangre Grande route. She recalled that last Friday, he told her hat he was going to make a “hustle”
Sinanan said he did not return home at his regular time of 6 pm and she got worried when 7 pm passed.
“I began making calls to his friends, relatives, brother and sister, but all answers were in the negative. We did not see him,” she said.
On Saturday, she waited all day for her son to show up but he never did.
Around 8 pm, she said she left home and went to Sangre Grande Police Station to report him missing.
Around 11 am on Sunday, police called her to come and identify the burnt car.
She said, “I was unable to go and my sons and daughters went and were able to identify the vehicle. I was told that it was Shashi’s vehicle by my children, but they were not able to say if the skeletal remains were that of Shashi.”
The distraught mother said she will only believe that it is her son when an autopsy is done and she gets concrete evidence.
