After a Christmas day of fun and excitement, events at the Wells family of Picton Road, Sangre Grande, turned into tragedy as a man was stabbed to death, by a person police suspect to be a female relative.
The victim, Nichosani Wells, 39, a father of one, was stabbed in his neck with a knife.
Police arrested and detained the relative suspected of doing the stabbing.
According to police, the incident occurred at 11.55 pm on Sunday, when the victim and the relative got into an argument.
The suspect, police said, armed herself with a knife and dealt the deceased a single stab to his neck.
As he fell to the ground, bleeding profusely, the woman called out to other relatives who rushed Wells to the nearby Sangre Grande Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A team of police officers from Sangre Grande Criminal Investigation Division supervised by Insp Ramlakhan and W/Insp Sylvester from the Arouca Homicide Bureau visited the hospital where they cautioned the suspect and placed her under arrest.
She was medically examined before being taken to the Sangre Grande Police Station.
Relatives described Wells as a well-respected member of the community, saying he worked with his father in building fancy blocks and other decorative concrete items for houses.
“He was never a selfish person and always encouraged the youths to get involved in learning a trade. He trained some of the youths to make the fancy blocks keeping them off the streets. He was well-known and had the respect for many,” a cousin told Guardian Media.
He said Wells was visiting friends and family during the day and all were in joyful moods.
“I am really confused as to why the stabbing took place,” he said.
Police have seized the knife used in the killing.
Up to late yesterday, no charges had as yet been laid against the suspect.
