Durrel Raymond, also known as ‘Shorto’, appeared at the Port-of-Spain Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with the murder of Vaughan ‘Sandman’ Mieres and three others on July 25.
Raymond who was shot in the left leg during the alleged incident hobbled into the court on crutches and was accompanied by several heavily armed police officers.
He had several steel pins in his leg which was also in a cast.
The accused, who was once described as a close associate of Mieres, appeared before Magistrate Sarah De Silva in the 11th Court.
He was also charged with the murders of Sandman’s wife Alita “Letty” Dehere as well as that of bodyguards Nigel Octim and Kadir Joseph.
All were shot dead at Mieres’s house located at light pole 11 at Las Cuevas Road in Las Cuevas according to the charges read out by the magistrate.
Raymond was additionally charged with the possession of ammunition and possession of a firearm.
Defence lawyer Ian Brooks who represented Raymond along with Sheldon Guerra made a request to the court that he be placed in the infirmary.
Magistrate De Silva indicated that it was a matter which the police and prisons needed to work out.
Court prosecutor Sgt Azad Ali gave the assurance to the court that the provision will be put in place to ensure that Raymond is attended to at the prison infirmary.
Raymond who briefly spoke told the court, “I have to go to the doctor next Wednesday for an X-ray.”
Sgt Ali also told the court they hoped that the disclosure of evidence would be completed within the next two to three weeks and submitted to the DPP’s office so that a State prosecutor could be assigned to the case.
Brooks raised concerns about the identification parade and his client and also about blood samples which were allegedly taken by police from his client. The matter was adjourned to August 29.
