Three po­lice of­fi­cers were in­jured while try­ing to ar­rest a man at the fu­ner­al of a mur­dered al­leged gang mem­ber on Sat­ur­day. 

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, at 4.30 pm, a group of of­fi­cers from the East­ern Di­vi­sion Task Force (EDTF) were mon­i­tor­ing the fu­ner­al of Dwight “Shafo” Saun­ders when they at­tempt­ed to ar­rest a mourn­er for us­ing ob­scene lan­guage. 

How­ev­er, a group of 30 men, who the po­lice claimed to be mem­bers of the “Re­sis­tance” gang, went to the man’s as­sis­tance and at­tempt­ed to block the of­fi­cers from de­tain­ing him. 

The men re­port­ed­ly threw met­al ob­jects at the of­fi­cers and the man briefly es­caped be­fore be­ing de­tained a sec­ond time by the of­fi­cers, af­ter they re­ceived back­up from their col­leagues. 

The 38-year-old Va­len­cia man was tak­en to the San­gre Grande Po­lice Sta­tion. He was lat­er charged with us­ing ob­scene lan­guage, re­sist­ing ar­rest, es­cap­ing law­ful cus­tody and three counts of as­sault­ing a po­lice of­fi­cer. 

Three of the of­fi­cers in­volved in the in­ci­dent suf­fered mi­nor in­juries and re­ceived treat­ment at the San­gre Grande Dis­trict Hos­pi­tal. 

On De­cem­ber 12, Saun­ders, 39, of Palm Road, Va­len­cia, was lim­ing at a bar in Va­len­cia when he was at­tacked by two gun­men. Saun­ders, a de­liv­ery dri­ver, was shot in his head and fell in­to a drain. An­oth­er pa­tron Stan­ley Car­ring­ton, 72, of Mal­oney Gar­dens, Arou­ca, was wound­ed in the shoot­ing and sur­vived. 

Stolen ve­hi­cle re­cov­ered on taxi stand

Quick work by po­lice led to the re­cov­ery of a ve­hi­cle short­ly af­ter it was stolen from a re­tiree in Cunu­pia on Fri­day night. 

At 8.40 pm, a 71-year-old re­tiree was dri­ving his Toy­ota Hilux near his home when a man walked in front of the ve­hi­cle and blocked his path. 

The man opened the dri­ver’s door, re­moved him from the ve­hi­cle, got in and drove away. 

The man made his way to the Cunu­pia Po­lice Sta­tion and made a re­port. 

Short­ly af­ter, the pick-up truck was seen parked near a taxi stand at Eleanor Street in Ch­agua­nas. 

A man match­ing the de­scrip­tion of the sus­pect who robbed the re­tiree was found stand­ing near the ve­hi­cle. 

The 22-year-old man, from Ed­in­burgh 500, Ch­agua­nas, was ar­rest­ed af­ter po­lice searched him and found the keys to the ve­hi­cle in his pock­et. 

The man re­mained in cus­tody, up to late yes­ter­day.
