Tobago recorded its first murder for 2021 when a game of cards played on the streets of Bethel turned deadly as four people were shot, one of whom died on Monday night.
The victim was identified as 61-year-old Ryan Thornhill of Riseland, Bethel.
Those who were left nursing gunshot injuries are ages 25 and 22 of Beverley Hills, Bethel and another 22-year-old of Caledonia Road, Mt St George.
Police said around 8:05 pm several persons were gathered on the road in the vicinity of Sesame Street, Bethlehem, Bethel playing a game of cards (wappie) in the roadway when a man emerged from some nearby bushes with a firearm and started shooting at the gathering. The gunman then ran off.
A short while later all four victims were seen lying on the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were subsequently taken to the Scarborough General Hospital by friends and family members.
Thornhill was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital while the three other victims are being treated at the hospital.
